Anyone done one of these? How safe are they?

Never done one. My wife wants to do it though. I don't see a reason to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

I'm sure it's safe though. You never hear about many accidents and it's being done all over the place day in and day out.

I would think pretty safe? People do it all over the country and rarely do you hear about accidents. Skydiving in general is pretty safe I'd say, and since they usually make you go tandem your first time I'd say tandem is safer still.

from the people i know who have done sky diving, you HAVE to do a tandem jump your first time, and maybe even a couple after that.

i'd think they are pretty safe considering you HAVE to do them before you can do them alone.

Incorrect, I went with just a tow line when I did it. So you're hooked to the plane and your chute opens automatically after a certain distance.

It was fun and you still have to do everything else yourself after the initial opening, including controlling your descent and whatnot.

It was fun and you still have to do everything else yourself after the initial opening, including controlling your descent and whatnot.

They trust general public to land on their own? The landing part is quite hard. You can easily break your legs, or land into water/tree trunk/whatever into death.

There's no way they do this without extensive prior training.

the tow line hooked to the plane opens the chute after a couple seconds of freefall. You control the decent.

Around me they are doing AFF.. First jump and you pull the chute and the whole deal yourself. you are connected to 2 other jumpers when you go out. But can get your license a lot faster this way. Lots of places are getting rid of static line around me

We did three or four hours of training in the morning, jumped in the afternoon. The line just pulls your chute, then you are on your own.

I did sprain my ankle on the landing, but that was 100% my fault and was not a big deal. Still really enjoyed it.

And with paratroopers, there's basically no freefall other than the time it takes the canopy to inflate (assuming we're not talking about commando types who might use HALO methods and/or airfoil chutes instead of plain canopies).

I thought you could do a normal solo jump on your first time if you just got enough training? Multiple days worth, I was thinking, which explains why most just do the tandem if it's one-time thing.

its definitely a thrill. for a newbie, tandem is probably safer than solo just bc you dont know what to expect and have no experience. whether it is any safer in the broad sense, don't really know.

you can train to go solo on your first jump if you wish, but i think its substantially more training than for just a tandem jump.

I think I had to count to three (one-one thousand, etc.) and if my chute was not open by then, I had to pull the reserve, so not that long.

This was several years ago, so it may not be used anymore. I liked it a lot though; it's almost like you are doing it on your own.

Its pretty safe and is amazing. I'll be going again in July. There will be some training and you'll have your two chutes. From talking with the tandem jumpers the riskiest part is the newbie jumper by far. As long as you do a couple of somersaults and arch your back you'll be fine. Free fall is awesome

Cute girls get to go for free if topless. Guys have to pay 2x the cost. At least thats what I was told

Some larger places offer it - usually the cheapest of the three options. IMO it leaves out the best part though

Heh. I think its cheaper because you don't need someone strapped to your back, they don't typically go as high and you need less training. IIRC the tandem class was 40min but that class was like 5 minutes long

The training time was opposite at the place I went to. Was almost none for tandem, but was half a day for static line.

They strap you real real tight to your instructor though; like baby Carlos strapped to Alan.

I've done a tandem jump- it was great. I'd love to try a solo jump but not sure if I ever will put in the training etc to get to that point.

I did a tandem jump, a long time back (haha I it recorded on VHS to give some idea). Had training before hand, followed up by inspecting the chute for damage.
