Exciting finish including a car airborne on the final lap and caught by the fence near the finish line.

8 fans injured at Talladega Superspeedway

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)-Eight fans were injured by debris when Carl Edwards' car went airborne into the safety fence on the final lap at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday.

Track medical director Bobby Lewis said none of the injuries was life-threatening but two women were airlifted to Birmingham hospitals. He said one likely had a broken jaw and the other was not injured but was taken because of a medical condition.

Lewis said they were airlifted because of traffic, not the severity of the injuries. The other six were treated and released.

Edwards was trying to block a move from winner Brad Keselowski, and contact sent his spinning car over Ryan Newman's hood and into the fence on the frontstretch.

The fence held and Edwards' car landed on the track.

Wonder if he is going to drive the Fusion Hybrid challenge tonight or not.....that was a wicked crash!

If you watch it again... Edwards car totally swiped across Ryan Newman windshield before it slammed into the fence. That must've been insane for Newman.

Good engineering on the catch fence to stop a several ton gar going about 160 mph.

lol "shades of Ricky Bobby"

also, I don't think the 9 car did anything wrong. I'm glad no one was severely injured, but Edwards ran into the 9 car.

i'm not a nascar fan, but my boss is... thanks to this.. i have something to talk about this morning with him.

holly crap yeah it was awesome. my dad called me and asked if was watching it (usually wach this race. its always fun to watch). i said no and flipped over. HOLLY FUCK it was a great shot. IN HD you can see all these tiny paices flying..wow.

now wish i watched the entire race. i had forgotten it was on =(

Haha...loved the Talladega Nights run to the finish line after he got out of the car.

Hell, just the fact that he's able to get out of the car and run after an accident like that is amazing.

Amazing race, amazing final few laps, amazing crash. There is a real problem with restrictor plate racing though. When you have 4 cars going 200mph and neither can really go faster unless they "bump" each other its inevitable things like this will happen. Something tells me the NASCAR officials are intentionally wanting things like this to draw the ratings as the crashes are what people pay attention to.

I'm a NASCAR fan, but I've never been big on the restrictor plate tracks. They have more to do with luck than skill. I do agree with many of the comments made by the drivers. It really sounded like nobody liked that race yesterday.

Eh, I am not much of a Nascar fan post Earnhardt SR. but I think the kid could have moved down some and gave Edwards a little room.He stuck the nose of his car under Edwards and then left Edwards move down into him. You could see he had no intentions of avoiding that. 2:10-2:17 on the video.

I agree the restrictor plate racing at Talladega and Daytona is all about avoiding the "Big one".....It sucks....
