I'm a lifelong coffeee drinker. However, since I quit smoking I find I now crave and drink tea!
So far I like Red Rose for the best commercial teabags.

So, edumacate me about teas. What should I buy?

It's all nonsense. Stick to red rose if you need some daily caffeine intake and don't waste your money.

If you'd like to try other blends, Darjeeling is a milder black tea while English Breakfast blends have a stronger flavor. I'm lazy so I use tea bags instead of loose, usually from Twinings.

I like to switch up my Red Rose, with Earl Grey or a simple Green Tea.

When I was a kid we occasionally went out for dinner with other families. We'd pick a restaurant and then the other family would take their turn. I'll always remember this fellow George who insisted we go to this fabulous buffet.

Well we did so and it was awful. Not bad, but horrific. It was overly salted, greasy, and tasted like crap.

When my father pointed this out, George responded "Yeah, but it's cheap and there's a lot of it!"

Twinings is the dregs. I dread going abroad, ordering tea and seeing the telltale tag peeking out from the teapot - because I know I'll basically be drinking the equivalent of dishwater.

I like PG tips too.

If you want a one stop (online) shop to try a whole bunch of stuff (in terms of types if not necessarily qualities), then try Adagio. http://www.adagio.com

I'm not really a tea head, though I've had tons of different kinds. I'm primarily a coffee drinker. However, I prefer Twinings for traditional black tea(Earl Grey and Irish Breakfast are my favorites), and Celestial Seasonings for herb tea. I'm sure neither are the best at what they do, but they're both easy to find, and reliable with their offerings.

Ehh .. I'm happy with any green tea.
My favorite though is a nice cup of hibiscus tea. Soo tasty and delicious.

PG Tips is a good solid black tea. A little honey and cream and you're good to go.

For drinking black tea straight I like assam. You can usually find it at a Persian grocery store or online but it's a little rarer at the regular store. Nice and mild, mmmmm.

BigLots had it a few months ago. I got about 12 40ct boxes for $3 each. They recently had a few Twinings teas. I got some loose Prince of Wales(not my fav, but good) for $2 a tin, and 100ct boxes of Earl Grey for $4 a box.

Honey and cream? Sacrilege I say, Sir! Milk or nothing!

Cream is my shorthand for half and half or 2%. :) And yeah, I sweeten my tea. But I'm at least snobby enough to avoid sugar like the plague! Does that make up for it? :D

Ok, go to Tealuxe on the web and look around. They have descriptions of the various teas and I like the blue flower earl gray. It's pretty good. I currently have 11 kinds of loose tea with me at work.

You want loose teas. Why?

A little tea history.

The major way tea is graded is by the size of the leaf. At the very bottom is the tiny pieces of leaves and dust. This used to be thrown away as waste. A clever fellow named Tetley made a fortune by putting the residue into a "flo-through" tea bag and marketing it.

Marketing FTW.

Meanwhile the rest of society who was unimpressed by this continued to drink the better product.

What makes it so? The smallest particles tend to leech out tannins which in turn make the tea flat and uninteresting at best.

I suggest looking on youtube for Alton Brown's show on tea.
