I recently switched to a Blackberry, and was really missing a touchscreen (been using a Palm or WM phone since 2003), so I started carrying my ipod touch as a PDA. Only thing I wish is that the bluetooth would allow PAN for connecting to the internet thru bluetooth. But before I got the BB, I used wmwifirouter on my Mogul to connect the ipod touch via wifi. Sure, it means carrying two devices, but may satisfy you iphone urges (somewhat) while keeping you SERO plan.

I've had an iphone since march and while I was initially psyched about having it, my admiration has begun to plummet. At this point, I can't wait until I have an android offering to choose on AT&T, or until I just up and leave AT&T for Sprint or T-Mobile.

Despite the tag line, the iphone definitely doesn't always, "just work". Lately, my phone becomes unresponsive, cell calls don't show up on my phone until I power cycle the device so it can refresh itself, the ipod function stutters and skips if I'm trying to do anything else on the phone, the shuffle feature is basically useless due to a horrible randomization algorithm, and the playlist will jump from the end of one song to the middle of the next song for no reason.

There is a fair bit I do enjoy, and when it's working smoothly, the interface is slick, but it's a pain that the homescreens have no real organization options, which becomes an issue with all the apps that can be downloaded to the device. My favorite feature by far is Visual Voicemail, but now we can get that via Google voice on pretty much any device other than an iphone, so it's no longer a killer app.

While it's the best all-in-one, feature-rich smartphone available from AT&T, I don't think the iphone is hands down the best phone. I've played with the Pre a bit and think it's pretty slick, but I'd need more time with it to be sure. I really like the openness of the software on both the Pre and the Android OS.

It's ok to get the phone but I know too many people that get pissed cus they don't get 3G in LA areas and some of them even use a MiFi and carry it with them cus AT&T has such crappy 3G coverage compared to Verizon/Sprint. Also there's the Palm Pre. It's a great alternative to the iPhone that does a many things better than it. Granted you wouldn't be able to stay with the SERO plan but you'd still pay less than you would with a similar plan on AT&T and still get much better 3G coverage. Also the Touch Pro 2 really is infinitely better than the first one. You really need to check one out.

funny, i just tried a blackberry tour on sprint coverage and was sorely disappointed. could be the blackberry i suppose, but i had areas with a nextel that i could make calls but my blackberry could not. data was limited. i could hear who i was calling but they couldn't hear me or my voice would break up. sometimes it worked like it should and sometimes it wouldn't. never could figure out why. got tired of trying and am going to the iphone.
the coverage for data for where i live (connecticut) is massive and my friend out in madison wi swears by his coverage. he can take it to the upper peninsula of michigan (trust me its about a remote as you can get) with data coverage. sprints poor customer information (spent a day going from the house to a retail sprint store where i got my phone to a corporate store just to return that blasted blackberry because no one knew the right way to do it without me being stuck on a 2 year plan) and nextel's poor data connect (which i loved for push to talk and rugged phones) made me finally jump to iphone.
ok so im not in a linear mode as far as telling my story but bear with me i forgot that i had a blackberry 8350i for 2 weeks as a demo with nextel and trust me not worth the money.
anywho i would recommend that if you are going to sprint take advantage of the 30 day money back policy (you will pay a 35 dollar restocking fee on the phone). really travel with your phone and see how you like it.

I think with the newer phones Sprint has out and is coming soon you should be patient. As others have mentioned Android is coming and there's the Pre. Whatever you do do NOT cancel your Sprint account before at least trying the iphone for 30 days. Remember - once its cancelled, you cant get it back. That would be a costly mistake.

I had an iPhone 3GS for two months, I switched from Verizon Wireless. I love the iPhone, LOVE IT! AT&T is horrendous. I couldn?t get service in the building I work at. Full bars outside, 3G coverage, but the moment I went inside all service was gone. I could stand next to a window and get an intermittent 1 bar. The cost of the iPhone?s monthly plan is more like $100/month if you include taxes and text messaging. That was a lot of money to spend when I couldn?t get service for 9 hours a day.

I am posting here to support the one suggestion mentioned several times above for getting an iPod Touch and use your current device as your personal access point.

I've owned quite a few smart phones and am a heavy user of data, I currently have a G1 with Yoobao battery & new back cover

It turns it into a brick, but I really love this phone/combo. It looks kind of odd, but I enjoy having something no one else knows WTF it is...

There's really not a good hand held solution with good battery life.

Got the iPhone when the 3GS came out and I love it. I can't believe the number of things that I do with it. With some apps, I almost never go to their web sites anymore, ie. Weather.com.

I have an Iphone now but had a G1..the store for Android is very similar to the App Store. Maybe theres not as huge a selection but theres still a big selection. The G1 was the best touch screen i had used minus the Iphone. Point is, maybe stick to Sprint and an Android phone. Unless you really want that media player capabilities.
