Discussion Talk me out of buying an old laptop with 64GB of RAM

The specs that are important to me:

Intel® Core i7 6820HK Processor
64GB DDR4 2133 MHz
17.3 inches 4K G-Sync panel
GeForce® GTX 980M 8GB GDDR5

Everything looks not that extraordinary except the 64GB RAM which has always been my dream to have in a laptop. This one's supposed to cost me ~$940. Is there anything better I can get? Keep in mind that I'm in the U.A.E. and all my searches turn up laptops that are more expensive and have only 16GB of RAM. I love RAM (don't ask me why. It's hard to understand why one loves what they love). I could pass up this opportunity and then wait a whole year to get something with DDR5 in the $1000-$1200 price range and I'm sure that it would still have only 16GB. I just can't think of any compelling reason NOT to buy this laptop as it seems it's gonna save me money in the long run. This laptop should theoretically work fine for the next 5 years based on my current usage scenario (mostly productivity and browsing. A little bit of gaming every now and then. Not necessarily on the latest games). So, can anyone dissuade me?

Dissuade you from buying a laptop with CPU launched in 2015 just because it has 64 GB of RAM? And the reason for wanting so much RAM is:
I love RAM (don't ask me why. It's hard to understand why one loves what they love)

Like the JG Wentworth commercials says, "it's your money". The reason for wanting 64 GB of RAM that you would never use doesn't make any sense to me, but it's not my wallet. ;)

Buying that laptop makes no sense. You can upgrade almost any recent laptop to 64 GB RAM, two 32 GB DDR4 SO-DIMM modules can be found for less than $200 on the new market. Four 16 GB modules will be even cheaper, and can also be easily found on the used market for much less.

The issue is that all the recent laptops that look decent to me are more expensive than this old ROG laptop. If I buy a recent laptop, I have to splurge extra for the RAM upgrade whereas with the ROG, I'm done in less than a grand.

@igor_kavinski I would always upgrade RAM myself, much cheaper. Same with storage.
I do the same, except in this instance, finding a 17.3 inch laptop with a decent discrete gpu that would still cost the same as the ROG laptop after the RAM upgrade is proving to be more difficult than I could have imagined. The ROG laptop is seeming more and more attractive from a value perspective.

Oh, I have tons of uses for RAM, most of them related to playing with VMs and creating RAM drives. If money were no object, I would get myself one of those fancy workstation laptops from Dell, HP or Lenovo. Sadly, money finds its way to those who either like to hoard it or can't quite figure out what to do with it.

Because the main cost of a gaming laptop is the GPU. A high end mobile GPU is easily 600$ of the cost by itself before markup. The RAM is cheap. 980 is the ancient part, those did not age well for performance per watt in today’s games. A 1060 Mobile will bench about 30%+ faster in some work loads than a 980M, but 10% slower in some high VRAM situations. I have 64GB Ram so I get it, but that was far cheaper than the GPU upgrade by itself, let alone the other upgrades.

@igor_kavinski A Ryzen 4000 laptop with an RTX 2060 or 1660 Ti sounds like a better option to me. Especially because of the much more powerful CPU. You can get one for little more than 1000€ here in Germany.

You already knew you need a lot of memory to create multiple VMs and run them simultaneously, why ask?

You only mentioned gaming, browsing and office productivity in the original post, none of them will need more than 16GB.

Like others had suggested, it will be a lot cheaper if you upgrade the memory yourself.

How can all that be for just $500?
