it could have been a lot more serious i read. some guy jumped out of his car once he crashed and ran away from the scene, and 1 car crashed into his civic's driver side door and another ended up on top of his civic.

Yeah, supposedly visibility was at about 50 feet (which, when going 60 or so .. it takes about 4 times that to stop) this morning with heavy fog in LA. I don't believe anyone died, but there were 13 injured and 9 critically if I remember right. I just heard a short blurb about it on the way home from work a few hours ago so don't hold me to it.

Sounds like it? It WAS indeed what you say. There is no excuse for a multi-car pileup. It's due to nothing other than people going too fast and/or keeping too close a following distance. Yes, it's that simple.

Excessive speed + low visibility = accident waiting to happen

I remember once when I was working at my last job...

There is a light in the middle of an intersection on HWY 26 (straight, flat highway) that can be clearly seen from a mile away when you crest a small hill. One night there was so much fog that I couldn't see a bit of light until I was actually in the intersection. Visibility was HORRIBLE. I was terrified doing 30 mph, yet people were rushing by me at full highway speed.
