BORING, Ore. -- One man was arrested and another is wanted for the alleged attempted murder of a man who was later shot while looking for help in Boring late Wednesday night.

Joshua Lee Rutledge, 27, was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail Thursday on charges of assault. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.

Authorities are searching for a second suspect, identified as Thomas Kenneth Sullivan, 26. Sullivan stands about 5-feet-11 tall and weighs about 180 pounds.

Both men are accused of trying to kill Portland resident Marc A. Luethe, 31, who was later shot by a Boring homeowner, said Det. Wendi Babst with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Luethe told investigators that he met Rutledge and a second man at a mutual friend's residence on SE Kelso Road in Boring and agreed to give the men a ride in his vehicle.

Once they were inside the vehicle, Rutledge allegedly attacked Luethe by hitting him in the head with an unknown weapon, causing several large gashes.

Luethe's vehicle crashed in a field and Luethe ran to a house on SE 232nd Drive, where he started banging on and then kicking in the front door after saying he had crashed his car nearby, Babst said.

The 67-year-old male homeowner fired a warning shot near the door while his wife called 9-1-1.

Deputies arrived at the scene and found Luethe lying on the deck of the residence with a single gunshot wound to his torso. He was taken to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital by ambulance.

It appears his injuries are not life threatening, Babst said.

Deputies later found Luethe's Dodge Neon sedan in the field.

Rutledge and the second man fled on foot.

Authorities asked that anyone with information about Sullivan's whereabouts to call the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office at (503) 655-8211.

The investigation continues.

Yeah, some screaming guy comes onto my property and tries to kick in my door, I am not going to look upon that as a sign of benevolent intentions. Especially if he is 31 and I am 67 (ie, a big physical mismatch), I'd rather shoot him than let him kick his way into my house.

Think about it. It is late Wednesday night, and you are awakened by a man yelling and banging on your door. Something about a car accident and/or being attacked. You tell the wife to call 911 and go get your firearm, because generally speaking, this sort of thing is going to involve the cops if for nothing else than to file an accident report. You approach the door, and he's yelling that he crashed his car in a field. Now, the guy is trying to kick in your door. You are in your later 60's, he sounds to be still a young man. Me, I'd be thinking he is wacked way the hell out on drugs, and sure as hell wouldnt let him into my house with my family around. Now, it'd be a different story if he wasn't trying to kick the god-damn door in, but this guy was trying to do so, and so he has gone from "suspicious" to "clearly threatening". Firing a "warning shot near the door" seems to be a relatively mild response, given the situation. Getting a glimpse of the guy probably wasnt an option unless you let him kick the door in and enter, and to me that doesnt seem to be a good idea.

Again, if he wasnt trying to kick the door in, but just yelling for help, I'd be totally against the homeowner discharging his weapon. But once he tried to kick the door in, the scenario changed entirely.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if this didnt involve alcohol or drug use on behalf of both the car driver and his passengers.
