Looks like their success came as a result of their "religious leaders" conviction to stop the drug trade. They did a wonderful job of stopping this, and training their people how to murder instead.

They didn't have to do the latter, the CIA had already done that, as well as equip them with weapons.

I sure wouldn't want to live there. My face is already black, and it would worry me greatly what the neighbors would think!

Which had nothing to do with Al-Qaida. I'm seriously tired of the whole argument that the US trained and supplied the Taliban or Al-Qaida. We trained the various ethnic and tribal groups from Afghanistan to fight the Soviets which most of them ended up being a part of the Northern Alliance. Why do you think Musharraf likes us so much? He was being supported by us back in the day too. Obfuscating the facts because of your Anti-American bias gets a little old after awhile. I've read a book by the CIA control who worked out of Islamabad and met with the leaders of the Soviet resistance on a regular basis. What he says contradicts what you say. So were you there or just making the US look bad with constant untrue hyperbole?

I would like to see your reference to that statement.

In other words, prove it son.

BOBBY RIBS and adlep, how do you figure I was "owned". (I hate kidded venacular)

I asked for a link that showed how the US had paid the Taliban not to grow poppies. I looked through those three links that EagleKeeper supplied and did not find any reference to the US paying the Taliban not to grow poppies.

It's lunch time and I went through them quickly so if you kids can point to the paragraph in one of those three links that directly says the US paid the Taliban not to grow poppies than please do so.

If any of you have another link that directly says the US provided funds to the Taliban not to grow poppies please provide it.

I consider this one of the ledgends that has come from a certain element that likes to spread misinformation since I have never seen any proof at all that it is true and still haven't.

I thought the Pakistanis helped out the Taliban to have a stable government on their border.

You mean like saying that someone got owned?

Somehow I doubt that the people that were spreading misinformation will show back up in this thread.

Powell speech

"...
We distribute our assistance in Afghanistan through international agencies of the United Nations and nongovernmental organizations. We provide our aid to the people of Afghanistan, not to Afghanistan's warring factions. Our aid bypasses the Taliban, who have done little to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people, and indeed have done much to exacerbate it. We hope the Taliban will act on a number of fundamental issues that separate us: their support for terrorism; their violation of internationally recognized human rights standards, especially their treatment of women and girls; and their refusal to resolve Afghanistan's civil war through a negotiated settlement.
..."

How many links do you need? It's pathetic to see you still try and defend yourself when it's so blatantly obvious you were wrong.

You are correct.. I just logged in.. I was going with only hearsay... I had heard about it right after the invasion of Afghanistan had started...

Some politicians were even whining about it at the time...

Incredibly, in May the U.S. announced that we would reward the Taliban with an additional $43 million in aid for its actions in banning the cultivation of poppy used to produce heroin and opium. http://www.house.gov/paul/tst/tst2001/tst110501.htm[/Q

I am glad that I was wrong though :D

Go back to off topic where you belong.

dahunan,

Thank you for admitting you were wrong. I have seen many people spreading this rumor and have gotten quite tired of it. Even elected officals that should know better than to spread that sort of BS were caught in that misinformation as you pointed out. A rumour once started is hard to stamp out.

I agree with etech (but don't get used to it). This came up before in the "Daddy, why did we invade Iraq?" thread. It was the one "fact" in the story that was clearly shown to be inaccurate. While it was widely reported, it doesn't hold water.

The taliban was effectively shut off from most international money. One could argue this led to their reliance on OBL money, but you can hardly blame the world for not wanting to give money to them.

Taliban was better than the US

tell that to the women and little girls over there who were barred from going to school, having a job, not allowed to be a doctor and not able to see one (cant have a woman showing her body)....

Well the Taliban really had a 1 man 1 vote rule. It was only bad because only 1 man got to vote.
