In the long forgotten land of Afghanistan this is happening

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3209639.stm
Taleban forces are retaking parts of Afghanistan as the post-war government shows signs of weakening, the UN's top peacekeeping official has said.
In a regular briefing to the Security Council, Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guehenno said many causes of insecurity "remain unresolved".

"In several border districts (near Kandahar and Paktika), Taleban have been able to establish de facto control over district administration," he said.

Germany has agreed to send 450 troops to deploy around the northern city of Kunduz where President Hamid Karzai launched the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Programme on Friday.

But so far no other countries have committed to the international force which the Security Council last week authorised to deploy outside the capital Kabul.

"There are worrying signs that the political compact that has allowed the government to press ahead... in spite of the differences of its individual members may be weakening," Mr Guehenno said.

"Insecurity has without question slowed the delivery of reconstruction, if not outright prevented it in the most insecure areas," he added.

We should have finished job 1 before starting a war in Iraq that could have waited since there was no threat coming from there. The real threat is the Taliban and Al Qaeda but now the effort in Iraq is taking away resources and focus and after over two years is jeopardizing success in Afghanistan. Is this what we can expect after two years in Iraq? We'll find out but the track record so far isn't good.

I took my kid to Chuck E Cheese last night. We played that game where you bash the mole when it pops his head up, but as soon as you do another mole pops up elsewhere. ;)

Heh, Afganistan will still have its problems. It would have been better if we completely fixed Afganistan before going into any other war. Even Germany still has Pro-Nazi Marches.

It's all about the famous American attention span, a whole two seconds and then when Temptation Island comes on, all is forgotten.

We should have put 50,000-60,000 troops on the ground in Afghanistan and actually put some effort into finding Osama. Instead we saved up our forces for the Iraqi conflict that had been in the works since 1993 (that's about when Wolfowitz started publishing shite about going back in). But who cares about the Taliban or Al-Qaeda, Saddam was an evil dictator...

To bad for the afghani people that they have little oil.

Otherwise we'd be there right now helping to secure their freedom for many years to come.

Yeah, you'd think they would learn a lesson from the VC in Vietnam.

Oops.

I've read estimates of between 2 to 3 million Vietnamese dead in the Viet Nam war. That sounds like they were clobbered very well to me. More so than the Taliban who were allowed to escape over the border into Pakistan where our ally and friend Musharaf allows them to stay.

Well there have been a handfull of US casualties in afghanistan. I would say it is even more lopsided than what the VC had.
