Are there any filter type programs that take the hiss out of Cassette transfered Mp3's ?

Also ........ If anyone's familiar with Media Jukebox is it wise when your tranferring Cassette to MP3 to use a lower KBPS ? 56/64/128 ????
Just wondering if it helps with the sound qulity by taking out some of the hiss & pops etc. ???

Cool Edit, Sound Forge, and WaveLab can remove hiss from a .wav file. You'll have to convert the mp3 to wav and back to mp3 again, so maybe you'll lose more quality than you'll gain, unless you have the original wav's you recorded from cassette.

I don't like the way current programs attempt to remove hiss/pops/clicks/general distortion, because they can't do it without removing parts of the music (they must invade frequencies our ears are sensitive to). IMHO (and I may sound crazy) it's best to just record the sound as it is.

Cool Edit 2000 will do it and is shareware.

When used with knowledge and care these "restoration" tools can be a helluva lot less intrusive/destructive than mp3 encoding. But of course there is potential for major sonic mayhem. I consider myself an expert in transferring vinyl and tape to CD-R, and in restoring marginal recordings to a pretty decent state. I have spent well over 1,000 hours refining techniques and learning the "tricks of the trade", transferring hundreds of LPs and cassettes to digital formats. In many cases the improvement is simply astounding. The tools in Cool Edit Pro, Steinberg WaveLab, and Sound Forge are amazing. Of course I would prefer pristine source recordings, but usually you have to work with what you have.

Workin'--Nuts....now you're gonna get me all worked up again about xferring my open reel and LP's. I've got ~600 LP's recorded on open reel and another 500 LP's. Main thing is, a lot of the open reel are stuff that I just can't get anymore. Very deep cut sort of stuff.

BTW, if anyone is lookin', I've settled on a cd/mp3/LP database called Music Library. Only $20 to register. I entered ~500 cds, figured I was satisfied with it, and registered it. I haven't tried the mp3 part of it.

Workin', what do you use to catalogue your stuff?

Now don't get all worked up Randy.... I know what you mean, some of the first LP's I converted seem to need to be done over - I've learned so much since then, and I see now a million ways I could make them better.

<< what do you use to catalogue your stuff? >>

I made my own MS Access database. I have every track from every album (~1300 albums) entered in there, along with producer, engineer, and all those other tidbits you might need sometime. It makes it really easy to find that one specific song, and the ability to do wildcard searches makes it even easier. The interface isn't pretty, but it does the job. Man, it took weeks to enter all the data, and I was really sick of it by the time I was finished.
