USS Constitution to sail under own power for second time in over a century

BOSTON - The world's oldest commissioned warship will sail under its own power for just the second time in more than a century to commemorate the battle that won it the nickname "Old Ironsides."

The USS Constitution, which was first launched in 1797, will be tugged from its berth in Boston Harbor on Sunday to the main deepwater pathway into the harbor. It will then set out to open seas for a 10-minute cruise.

The short trip marks the day two centuries ago when the Constitution bested the British frigate HMS Guerriere in a fierce battle during the War of 1812. It follows a three-year restoration project and is the first time the Constitution has been to sea on its own since its 200th birthday in 1997.

Before that, it hadn't sailed under its own power since 1881. The Constitution is periodically tugged into the harbor for historical display.

That's a very odd looking picture of a beautiful ship. The masts are stepped and not a soul to be seen on the rigging, kinda like the space shuttle with the wings removed.

i went on a tour of the ship when i was a little guy, and i still have a vivid picture of what it must have been like to fight on that ship. totally lethal, to everyone.

Just think, we're only 400 years away from taking the 200 year old USS Constitution starship on a posterity cruise around sol system.

In the pic (which is probably just a file photo), that's just the lower masts for the fore, main, and mizzen. The topmasts and upper topmasts aren't stepped, and none of her yards are aloft. The only way she could sail anywhere in that condition is to drift.

I'm pretty sure we both attempted to say the same thing. 🙂

I'm pretty sure now that is just a file photo and not a photo of how she will be rigged for this trip. On the wiki page they describe the last time she sailed and have a photo of her with her masts in and yards aloft. She sailed for about 40 mins and then they towed her back in.

It's secretly heading to join the attack on Iran.

So? We'd still be sending something that would whip the entire Iranian "Navy"!! 🙄

Can you imagine, the looks on the faces of some Iranian patrol boat's crew, when they get a 6" cannon full of grape shot or chain shot fired at them?? 😱 😎
