Taking the bus everywhere SUCKS.

So my car was totalled a couple weeks ago (search for "accident" if you want to read about it) and I'm waiting on insurance money so that I can afford a new one. Luckily, Ann Arbor has a good bus system and I've managed to procure a U-M unlimited bus pass for my sans-car time.

So anyway, the bus stops across the street from my place, which is nice. I get on the bus, take a 40-minute ride (including a ~10 minute 'layover' at the supermarket) to the main bus station, at which point I have to walk about 3/4 mile to work, and I can't help but get there about 25 minutes early because of the timing of the busses.

So after class and work, I have to go to my other job, way south of campus at DPS. I hop on the campus bus, take it down to DPS, work for a couple hours, and then take the campus bus back to central and walk the ~1 mile to the main bus station again.

But once I get to the main bus station, I get a call from my boss at DPS, who informs me I accidentally walked off with one of his keys, which he absolutely needs tomorrow. So I walk the 1.5 miles from the bus station to DPS, give him the key, walk the 3/4 of a mile to the closest city bus stop, and wait for 30 minutes on a main road for the bus to take me home.

I can't wait until I have a car again. :|

I could "Bike The Ride" as they call it (all the busses have bike racks), but I think it may be more of a hassle to have a bike around than it is to simply walk. But I'll think about it.

Luckily, I have to go to my parents' house today after class, so while I had to take the bus TO class and work, I don't have to take it home. :)

Heh, I actually like the bus ride itself...it's waiting for it that sucks. I'm just impatient.

BTW, I'm picking up my 2004 Honda Accord LX 5-speed manual tomorrow afternoon. My clutch foot will be getting a good workout (my first manual car). Now I can be even lazier! :) Totally paid for by me, I didn't even need a cosigner. :D

EDIT: oh, and we used to have rental coverage but my family's got four cars, so we just figured it was unnecessary, as someone could pretty much always hitch a ride. We didn't count on my car being totalled, and my sister moving to Kalamazoo, though. :(

If the other driver was given a citation (as stated in your thread) their insurance should be footing the bill for a rental for you to drive.

I'd hate to depend on public transportation in the USA, but the rare ride on a bus/train is enjoyable.

I'm surprised that a college town like Ann Arbor has crummy public transit. (Never been there, is it a "college town?")

Get a moped. Best $300 I ever spent. If you are in college, it's unbeatable. Ride it on the streets, park it on a bike rack. No parking tickets, or greedy meters. No insurance required, "registration" consists of a $15 sticker good for 4 years (in MI), 100 MPG, cheap to maintain/own/operate, work on it in your apartment (I did this a couple times :D). Compared to costs for a car, it paid for itself so many times it's ridiculous. I gave it to my brother when I no longer had use for it - it's got over 11k miles on it now, and still runs great (although a bit smoky).

Although, it does kind of suck in crappy weather (only thing that stopped me was deep snow) and your friends will always want to borrow it.
