taking pets on planes

Tell me everything I need to know...

- do we need our own carrier or do they have them onboard where they put them ?
- do we just bring the dog to the check-in counter with us ? (small guy, only about 11lbs)
- standard fee ?
- what if we're buying the airline tickets online, how do we account for him ?
- how would claiming work after we land ?
 
if anyone's done it, I'd like to know if they thought it was worth the extra effort/$ cause we don't HAVE to take him...
 
We just put our dog in a suitcase and checked him.

Took him a week or so to get back to normal, but it saved a lot of hassle.

In all reality, I wouldnt put a dog on a plane unless you had too. It would be pretty traumatic, and the process is pretty involved.

If you have the option of not taking your pet along, then don't. There's no way I'd put a pet through the traumatic experience of going through so many changes and different situations.

seriously you can fly with a small dog.. my friend did, accompanying a dog to japan. Remember if your flying to another country they will quarentine for about 2-6weeks.

She had teh small dog in a cage under her legs, it was tough, but she managed the long pacfici rim flight..

ouch and I thought bringing a cat and dog on a flight cross country coast to coast was bad. Just had to buy another seat.

You do realize that, while the pet carrier section is heated, the rest of the cargo hold isn't?

I wouldnt do it....

Fiancee's sister had to take her dog with her when they moved to Costa Rica and the dog still hasnt totally gotten back to normal (and its been 7 months now). DO NOT DO IT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO.

air sickness in dogs... interesting... should look into this. What do you mean not normal ?

Ok the decision is we won't bring him... didn't know there were other concerns like that.

He used to be a very playful and personable dog (he's a yellow lab) and would always look for any toy to bring you to you so you could play with him.

Well now he apparently just mopes around alot and really dosen't care all that much for playing. He is also apparently very easily startled where he didnt used to be. Granted he did move to a foreign country, but the size of his backyard quadrupled in size and he's experienced nothing traumatic other than the plane ride.
 
That was the right decision. A friend was going to a show with her border collie, and Alaska Airlines lost the dog for 3 days!!
It was never the same. We took our Jack Russell in a small plane, and he was not too thrilled about the noise. We had gotten a prescribed doggie downer, and he was OK after the first flight. We returned home, and later that day he had a siezure. It turns out that it is a common side affect of that doggie downer, and we really wished the vet had properly informed us.
It was sickening to watch him get up, kinda circle around pivoting on his hip, then go over, moan and void all over the place. We thought we had lost him.
 
I did some reading on it one time and according to the info I read there is about a 5% chance the animal will die during the flight.
 
you know sometimes I get tremendous pressure with my ears/head going up and down like that... could it be that they feel something much worse ?

I don't think just the feeling of being disowned for a few hours would change a dog's personality. Then again, dogs have a brain of a 2-year old (is that right?).
 
my dog flew in cargo as part of continental's petpass program. he hated it of course, but he was fine and has had no behavioral issues resulting from it.

i agree with aphex. i've heard too many horror stories to feel comfortable having my dog on an airplane
 
I think it's really inconsiderate to take animals in the cabin of an airplane. Those with allergies are meant to suffer for 2-20 hours because someone can be without Shmuffikins for more than 10 seconds? Jeez.
