I don't take personal calls on my cellphone at work. I will listen to the voicemail and then if necessary step outside to call back. Otherwise I wait until the end of the day. My wife will just text message me or call through the switchboard.

anything longer than a minute, best to walk away from your seat and have the conversation somewhere where it wont disturb anyone.

i didn't vote cause my option isn't up there.

no, it's not okay but did i do it when i worked? yeah. we weren't supposed to carry cell phones with us (supposed to leave it in our locker) but everyone just put it on vibrate. if i got a call and i felt like talking, i might step out or take a break or something

If it doesn't interfere with your coworkers, your customers, or your productivity, I don't see a problem.

I think if you're doing a ton of personal phone calls its a problem, but you can't just ignore your personal life for 8-10 hours each day....then you have issues.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought this was frowned upon.

There are several individuals at work that are regularly taking personal calls on their cell phones during work time.

I could see if it were an emergency situation (kid is sick, wife pregnant, etc), but these are not emergency calls.

Am I the only one that finds this annoying/innapropriate?

That depends, are you posting on ATOT from work?

baZING! :p

i make and receive personal calls at work, just like everyone else here. the only time its ever a problem is if the "office manager" has something against ya, then she watches you like a hawk and reports every little detail to the owner on a daily basis. luckily his view is that if work gets done when its due and there wasnt overtime due to it, he doesnt care if we practice a circus act from the rafters. he told her point blank, and she still does this for people she hates. she doesnt do it to me anymore, but every new female employee feels her wrath. i do usually tell people ill call em latger on break or after work, but theres the occasional one that ill take outside and deal with. especially kid issues. they dont call unless they NEED to. usually. and yes, i take the calls outside so i dont bug anyone else in my bullpen like office area.

Shouldn't you concentrate on your own work instead of worrying what oher people do? If it bothers you that much say something to your boss.

I've done it, but I try to keep them short. I also won't do it if I'm doing actual work at the time.

Unless I have reason to believe it may be very important (someone calling who never does, known emergency, etc) I will let it go to voicemail and then check the message when I have a minute. If it's important I'll call back.

Well, to a certain extent..
so far through my observation.. there are staff who over abuse it by using the phone more often then they could complete their work for the day..
that one needs attention.

Otherwise, Its perfectly fine to take personal calls in moderation.

I work at a small law firm and its pretty chill . . normally just really brief calls though . . . nothing like i'm at work to end a conversation fast. So in that sense, i guess its inappropriate, but my boss is chill, as long as the work i'm assigned is done, he doesn't care what i do. I'm sure larger companies are more stringent but judging by these posts, i may be wrong. . .
