Taking personal calls on your cell phone at work...

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought this was frowned upon.

There are several individuals at work that are regularly taking personal calls on their cell phones during work time.

I could see if it were an emergency situation (kid is sick, wife pregnant, etc), but these are not emergency calls.

Am I the only one that finds this annoying/innapropriate?

I hear a lot of people taking personal calls on their work phone :p. I prefer making my personal calls on my cell phone though, because I'm at least "wasting" my own money on the call itself rather than spending the company's money.

Depends on how often, what they're working on at the time, and how long the calls are.

Ding. I don't care to hear about your upcoming rectal exam, but a few times a day people get personal calls about what they're doing that night. 99% of the time they respond "I'm still at work, let me call you when I get off". I personally think it's ok if it's not disrupting to work.

It's a double standard, but it depends on the job. Some jobs simply require your butt to be in a seat and available for work. In these jobs, personal conversation is a huge detriment to the overall productivity/moral of the deparment.

In other jobs where productivity is measured in less absolute ways or where you are reactionary waiting for work it is less of an issue. In my job I might have to work 18 hours doing an install and/or put in a 60 hour work week. Plus I might get paged at home at night or on the weekend. I don't feel too guilty about making a call to my wife during the day.

I could care less what my coworkers do just as long as it doesnt interfere with me. And yes, I answer calls all day long.

Five calls or more per 8 hour day.

Anywhere from a minute to 10 minutes.

It's fine at my job and my past job. Just not in meetings! But that goes without saying.

Just don't banter on for ages...

Yup - depends on work environment too, cubicle farms, etc. We have folks here that use their work-provided phones for all sorts of things, like selling farm animals, etc etc. :Q

One other thing...my personal cell phone has somehow turned into my primary source of contact for my boss/coworkers.

I swear I put more minutes a month on there for business calls than I do for personal use.

Again, further reinforcing my apathy towards personal calls at work.

That depends, are you posting on ATOT from work?

If I get or need to make a call I step away into a hallway or something so I'm not bothering my co-workers with my personal business. I think it's fine as long as it's only an occasional thing.

Yes. However, I am still doing the work requested of me (at the same rate I would be if I were not), and I'm not disturbing others.

I work with very few people and lots of the time I'm here by myself, so I'll take calls. I don't like being on the phone long, however, so they never go over 5 minutes unless it's quite important.

Well, I probably take/make a couple personal calls a day. Usually just a few minutes each though and if I'm talking about personal stuff I will go outside. I don't like to have other people hear my personal business.

There is no non emergency call that should last over 2 minutes. If it is an emergency then you should leave work anyway.

as long as i am not busy on the phone or with a co-worker or in a meeting. Nevertheless, the whole ENGR group has my personal cell phone :(
