Taking my computer to summer college

If any of you remember I was asking whether I should take it or not. I finally decided that I will take it because I will be gone for six weeks and there's no telling how bored I will get. Anyway.. it's a rather big system (17" monitor, Antec case). So now my question is, what should I do to prepare it for going away for six weeks? Should I get out the dremel and make some holes to loop some locks through? Should I set up a logon/screensaver password?

Any ideas would be appreciated...


Oh, I can also, potentially cram the computer into a smaller case, do you guys think it will be worth it? Or should I just keep it in the antec?

if you are driving, just leave it in the same case

what room/space will it be in that you are worried about the security of it? a dorm room ? with a weirdo room mate? or what?

If I live anywhere for more than a week with broadband, my computer goes with me. I dunno why you are even thinking about not taking your computer. Colleges require their students to have computer access. As long as you're not in some cabin with a couple weird roomies, by all means, take it

if you're not on the first floor, and don't have an idiot as a roommate, you might not need a lock.. it really depends on where you're going, what kind of area, etc. and a screensaver password is useless... need to have 2k/xp and just lock it. I've been roomming w/ ppl i know and am continuing to do so.. so i never had any real issues about theft... we're all pretty much very secure about our stuff... i only lock it to keep them from goatse'ing my comp...

Are you going to a COLLEGE program or a high school program in a college? If it's the latter, take it. If your roommate is cool, don't do anything. If not, lock it down with a BIOS password. My friend did the same, and brought his computer to UF for the sole purpose of high bandwidth porn. That, and his booze hookup, means that he's becoming pretty popular.

I took mine (in my Supermicro 760A! :Q) and never locked it. My door was always locked whenever I wasn't in the room, and my roommate understood my policy and kept the door locked too. That should be fine if you have a nice roommate.

What kind of Antec case is it? If you think anybody is remotely smart, you might want to lock the case up. I run Windows2000 and it will not boot without authentication of the administrator (my password ), nor will it come out of screen saver without it. My system is impenetratable! Nobody has touched my computer in over a year- it is solely my domain.

I kept mine in a dorm for my first year and had no problem except my first roommate was always on it. Some sort of password (i.e. locking the computer, bios pass, etc...) comes in handy when you are gone just so someone doesn't casually use the computer. I always hated coming back and having crap all over my desktop, but I dealt with it cause I didn't want to have to type in a password every time I booted up. So if you don't mind typing a password every time yourestart, go with a bios pass and a screensaver pass. Or just install XP and lock it.
