I take my laptop on the plane every week, and they NEVER once asked me to boot it up... usually I just throw it in a separate bin through the x-ray machine and that's it

From what I remember, they used to do that every time I (or any of my family) went on flights back around 2002-2003. It probably just got to the point where it took so long they gave up.

You would think that they have stuff like this standardized, but no... Same thing with shoes, some places will make you take it off, others won't. Metal detectors are set to different sensitivities, sometimes my belt sets it off, other times not.

I really don't see how airline travel has been made safer, it's all just a show and added hassle. I recently flew from Denmark-Toronto-Philly-Syracuse-Chicago-Columbus-Denmark, with a lighter (I completely forgot about it in my jeans pocket, the mini pocket that's inside the front right pocket) and no one caught it until I was getting on a plane to go to Italy a few days after.

Wow, what business are you in?

You just place it in the xray machine. You don't need to boot it up. The whole boot it up procedure was in the days when you could ask for a hand inspection of your devices. You can't do that anymore, everything must be xrayed.

I work for a study abroad program but this trip was mostly personal, I get 5weeks of vacation🙂

The trips I go on for work, well just imagine trying to get 30 college students with a spring-break mentality through places like Russia, alive and without being arrested.

do they make it diffucult if you take your laptop as carry-on

Don't listen to these other guys, you haven't been able to have a laptop as a carry-on since after 9/11. They just think it will be funny when yours gets seized. YOU HAVE TO CHECK IT.

I just took a flight a few months ago and watched a dozen people board the plane with laptops in hand. One guy even did something dangerous with it; Shock and awe, he watched a movie! Ohh noooo!

I've always just had to take the laptop out of the bag and put it in the plastic container thing and then just send it through. Never had to actually turn it on. But if you are bringing extra batteries with you Take them out of your bag. Batteries look very bad to the X-ray people. I got stopped the first time because I had 2 extra batteries and left them in my carry-on bag instead of the laptop bag. So take them out and put them with the laptop to save yourself some time.

In the US, as others have said, flying with a laptop is easy. The toughest security I have ever seen, however, was flying out of Tel Aviv, Israel. The security check of JUST me took about 45 minutes. I had to walk through multiple metal detectors, my carryon was scanned 3 times, and inspected 4 times. The took cotton swabs and ran them over everything in both my checked and carryon luggage. I guess I understand though why they need be a little more diligent.

Bigrash, I travel all the time and except for security it's no big deal. I am flying next week and my inspiron will be going too. One issue that (I am surprised) no one has mentioned is actually USING the laptop while flying. The front-to-back distance between seats has gotten so small that it is near impossible to USE the thing while on the plane.

I've flown through the Detroit and Atlanta airports lots of times with my laptop. They have NEVER asked me to turned it on. All they say is that if you have a laptop, take it out of the bag (if it is in one) and place it on a tray by itself. They also recommend that you have a a sticker with a name and address on it. I don't have one. Don't like stickers on my lappy. Figured that if there was ever a dispute, we could find the owner by trying to log on 🙂

I know it's already been said, but all I've ever had to do was run it though the x-ray machine in its own bin, and if I'm one of the lucky few, they'll swab it and test for explosive residue.

I would however, also run hubs/switches, and anything else that might look suspisious (sp?) through seperately.

I got a secondary screening once because I left my 16 port hub in my bag and it caught their attention on the xray.

QFT. The did wipe mine with the bomb detector thingy one time, but that's it. My TI-89 got more attention than my laptop. It's no problem at all.

If you're going to use it on the plane, you better keep your elbows contained within your OWN SEAT.

Sarcasm doesn't carry very well across the net.

Yes you can take it, just gotta put it in a box seperately and they'll poke it a bit?
