I'm in California, but I'm sure the laws are consistent everywhere

1) What's the PROPER way to change lanes?
signal, glance, side mirror?
2) How fast should I go? Right at the speed limit? Even if cars are passing me up like crazy?
3) When do I look left and right and such?
4) What else should I do to earn 100 score?

Some advice from the guy that failed his test on Friday :Q

1) according to my study guide from driving class, its rear mirror, signal, side mirror, then over shoulder.
2)NEVER go above the speed limit, try to go slower than the speed limit. Well, thats why I did ;)
3)Look left and right when you change lanes, when you enter a new street, etc.
4)Put a plate above the glove box with chock full of candies, and put a "take some" sign next to it ;)

NOTE: Do not drive on the wrong side of the lane!

You live in California. The laws are not consistent everywhere, and who knows what California thinks is right. :)

Just exaggerate everything that you'd normally do.

You probably won't have to go anywhere that you'd end up with cars passing you. Driving tests aren't that long and they don't take you on the highway.

Remember to adjust the mirrors before starting the car, even if you drove there in that car. And signal every time you move to the left or right in any way shape or form, even if you're pulling into traffic from the side of the road or on a ramp.

alpha is correct on everything! Also after a intersection there is the speed limit posted USE that to your advantage. Scanning is important also, look left and right at everyone cross street you pass. When making turns go into the closest lane you are turning into without crossing the line. Afterwards when you pass, you can forget all this junk! I get my license in Febuary, hopefully ;). Good luck.

man, I had a total 100 in drivers education when I was 16, the teach' said I was by far the best driver they'd seen in the longest time.. and then comes the test, and the first thing she tells me is that no matter how perfect I do, if I run a red light, she has to fail me. so I'm drivin' along, doing perfect, have a perfect score so far, when the light turns yellow. I have to literally stand on the brakes and come to a screeeeeeeching halt, the dude behind us almost rear-ending us, so I can stop at the light. if I'd have gone through, she told me she would have had to fail me. but she said in reality, I should have gone thru that damn light. :(

anyways..

Answers:

1. Fire a warning shot with your 9mm across the hood of the car in the lane you wish to change into.

2. 10-15mph over the speed limit. Shows the instructor you can go with the flow in real life.

3. Look left or right whenever you see a hot girl in the car next to you or you hear gunfire.

4. Listen to good music. Backstreet Boys in the CD player is sure to get you a failing score.

Before changing lanes, signal and always check traffic behind and beside you. Check all mirrors, glance over your right or left shoulder to check if the lane is clear.

You should go the speed of traffic but don't go over the limit.

Always glance at the mirrors every 5 sec. (thats what I do) to check the traffic around you when you are driving. Scan, the area before you turn into an intersection and so on. Always scan the area.

I also took my test in California, I think they are pretty tough cause there are tons of drivers in Cali. I took it in Long Beach, CA. and I had about 10 errors. I failed once.

Take your CA. ID with you, insurance info., and registration.

Don't signal at first before you want to make a lane chage! You can tell the dumb drivers who do this, you want to look in the rear window then signal, check mirror look over shoulder. Its just polite and easier if you ask me.

1) Extend your arm, extend your middle finger, curse, and swerve as violently as possible (preferably with an audible skid) into the lane.
2) Go as fast as the car can go, for two reasons: it will impress the testor (especially good if it's a hot woman;)) and let him/her get more done in a shorter time so they can go home early.
3) Constantly. Whenever you do, be sure to utter things about hoping the cops don't see you "cuz ya gotz lotsa dope'n sh!t in da trunk." To make him/her feel more important, feel free to ask him/her to help you look.
4) Flirt with them, even if they are male (most male testers are gay(j/k);)). Tell them, in detail, about the cosmetic surgery you had so the police and FBI wouldn't recognize you.

hey golderbear: are you taking the test at the fremont DMV? that's where i took it and people say they are the easiest...but as long as you do everything they taught you in driver's training you should be fine...

in driver's education they told me the correct way is SMOG...signal, mirror, over the shoulder, go

Yup..but the roads around that area sure could use some construction work and the rain won't help much either :(

Bah why are you going to signal before you glance the rear view mirror (i mean how hard can it be?) wouldn't make sense? When i see someone signal and not look before you think they want you to speed up or slow down for them to get into that lane...hell no unless you are extremely hot woman!

rear view mirror -> signal -> shoulder/mirror -> go IMHO

mpg: i do MSOG (what you suggested)...i was just saying what i was taught...i just wish people would signal when there's hella cars...i don't care if you don't signal when no one's around, but when there's bumper to bumper traffic and you don't signal i get pissed...hehe

also, apy attention to those residential roads near the DMV, the one here in Orange County's Westminsiter has a 4 lane road, that i thought was a 2 lane. So when mkaing a rigth turn, move ALL the way over

I live in CA.
Here is the procedure.
1. Signal
2. Center rearview mirror check
3. Check the blind spot by looking over your shoulder at the lane where you are changing.
4. If clear, change lane.
If you miss any of 1-3, you will lose points. They specifically look for that.
I don't think side mirror is required, because the rearview mirror and over shoulder covers all the blindspots.
My advice. There is absolutely no requirement that you change the lane immediately when the instructor tells you. Just do the above and change lane when it's clear. No speeding. Go about 5mph slower then limit. That will give you room to speed up a little when changing lanes.
She might be impatient with you, but noone can fault you for playing it safe.
