Taking a computer on a plane, suggestions?

Well, i am flying from seattle to dallas to hang out with a good friend/old roomate/clanmate/etc and im gonna take my box (he has a lcd for me to use) and ive never flown with one. I want to take it as a carry on, its a superlanboy case, i dont know how security is with this kind of stuff nowadays.

I'd get it registered by the airline-- I doubt they'd let you take it as a carry on. But, I don't know... you could always try calling the airline.

yes, carry on is the way to go
don't check it, it will either be damaged or stolen

they'll xray it like any other carry on bag

bad news. I took my case (full tower) on a plane back home from school about 14 months ago - wrapped it in a blanket and put it in a bag, had to check it. Too heavy so had overages.

It arrived in one peice, but it had obviously been thrown around as one corner was bent it.

I had done things like taken the HSF off and removed some other likely to break off components, and it still works fine, but it's never going on a plane again.

You're asking for trouble, but if you do I'd recommend storing/shipping the drives and removing the HSF.

A shuttle is one thing, a LanBoy is another. I have one and would never attempt to take it on a plane. Spend a little money and ship it Fedex or something.

Make sure there are no snakes inside first.

Carry-on is the way to go. I've seen the way they handle the checked-in bags, I would NEVER put my computer through that. Torture-testing at it's best!

Ya, i would take out the video card, hsf, secure everything before i take it.

I checked one in with 1/2 of cardboard and bubble wrap the outside.. it sat in the luggage with all the towels.. nothing was damanged but wasted a luggage for a pc..

Your best bet is probably to have it shipped to your buddy's place.

agreed. fedex it (or even UPS if your wantig to ) to your friends place via overnight or 2-day shipping or whatever. saves a LOT of time and hassle.

I would take out all the components and have it in a carry on before i did that. Then use a cheap case that he has when i get there.

If you absolutely must carry it with you, I would recommend contacting both the airline you are flying as well as the airport you are flying out of to see what guidelines they may be able to offer to keep you from getting held up in security while it is checked. Personally, I wouldn't even dream of doing it, as I have had screeners ask me to turn on my laptop to prove that it was infact a functional computer and not some nefarious device intended to bring about the extinction of all mankind. You would be kind of hard pressed to do that with an incomplete system, which might cause you all kind of headaches that you probably don't want.
