My professor is running a study about emoticons aka smileys. He's trying to figure out exactly what effect a "🙂", "🙁", or "😉" has on a message, for which he needs experienced Internet users like you guys to do a short survey. This is a real research project which will be published in the coming year. Please help us get some better data through the ATOT effect by taking this short survey - here's the URL:

Thanks!

I don't get it. The email had no emotional content, no cognitive spontanaety whatsoever, and was written like a monologue rather than a conversation. To my mind, smilies are very nuanced, and the text has to be equally nuanced for the smiley to work as anything more useful than the totally useless OMGHI2U! All the smiley does is add more emphasis to the restaurant experience, implying that in terms of disappointment, the restaurant exceeds that of not seeing his friends. This is misleading however, because the writer is about as interesting as moldy sweatsocks, and I really don't give a rats ass what he thought of the restaurant.

Well, it is a scientific experiment, and that requires that the test email be balanced towards neutrality as much as possible. The whole point is to isolate whatever effect a given smiley has upon the message. Thanks for the feedback. Also, a big thanks for those of you who participated!
