I have horrible back pain right now, but I need to work and can't get too loopty...can I get work done on vicodin? I haven't taken one in many many years so I'm not sure how I would react.

Yes you can...as long as your not a carpenter or something like that dealing with things that can impale you.

The stuff makes me loopy, stupid and sleepy...and since I'm allergic to it, gives me hives and can make it difficult to breathe.

If I take it with Benadryl, I can tolerate it from the allergy standpoint...but it still makes me stupid and groggy.

I'm a software developer and when I had a tooth infection the dentist put me on vicodin for a week. I worked from home that week. My work hours were super odd, but that was one of the most productive weeks I've ever had. I would work all through the night, and be awake to attend some morning status meetings by phone, then go to sleep for most of the day and wake up as the sun was going down. I sat on the couch and coded the entire time I was awake, and I think it actually helped my concentration.

The project was very successful too. Just stick to the prescribed dose and you should be fine.

I have found your looptiness is inversely proportional to the amount of pain you're in. When I had a kidney stone they pumped me so full of Demerol I should have been drooling, but because I was in so much pain I felt un-dulled in my mental clarity.

You'll probably be less sharp with your mind focused on the pain.

Two everyt four hours? Nope! Four every two hours.
When you come back, your back will be just fine again.

You can take it, but don't try to overexert yourself. Take some breaks while you can, because your body needs time for your muscles to recover.

YMMV, I took them when I had my Wisdom tooth taken out, I didn't feel any pain, but I didn't notice any of the side effects that people tend to experience either. I was still able to twitch at full speed in CS, and seemed just as alert. Maybe it was all in my mind I didn't feel different, but I definitely didn't get drowsy. The first day I took them I took the max recommended and ended up staying away for 24 hours after.

Be careful with that stuff, you might start seeing your best friend's dead girlfriend around.
And add:

And see your dead employee. And imagine fucking your boss. And check yourself into the looney bin.
