Grab a Treo 600 and use the minutes for broadband. KB KB KB KB many many KBs. 9pm-7am... leave it on a 5-second meta refresh page with images. ;)

That does NOT work. You WILL get charged for "above alloted data" charges. I used my sprint cellphone as a modem one month a TON and they charged my company for it... who told them that if they expect to get the money then we'll cancel and go with verizon. The removed the charges
There are no data limits. It's just by minutes alone as I didn't sign up for a data plan. No limits but time and the Treo's battery.

I don't know what you did... maybe using it as a modem is a different category or you had a plan limiting data usage.

EDIT>>> Ahh yes now I remember... it was the Vision plan... unlimited browser usage for $15/mo. (I was still using the free trial period).

Vision rocks. That's what I use to get my laptop online when I'm away from home. 10, 15 bucks extra and you get unlimited internet access(phone->data cable->laptop). It's been very useful because the Roadrunner seems to go out every month.... This month I'll be without it for 9 days. These RR c0cksuckers should have to pay for my Sprint PCS plan. :D

Modes

Many phones are advertised as being "tri-mode" or "dual-band", etc. These refer to the combination of technologies and frequncy bands the phone supports.

AMPS is the analog technology, which has inferior features and quality, but often superior coverage. Digital technologies include CDMA, TDMA, and GSM.

The two frequency bands in the US are 800 MHz (Cellular) and 1900 MHz (PCS). Europe and many other parts of the world use 900 MHz and 1800 MHz. The 800 MHz band is also sometimes referred to as 850, specfically when referring to the new "GSM 850" mode.

As an example, a CDMA tri-mode phone would support AMPS 800, CDMA 800, and CDMA 1900. That means it would work in both frequency bands in digital, and also work in analog (which is only 800 MHz.) The same is true for TDMA.

A dual-mode CDMA phone could be either AMPS 800 / CDMA 1900, or AMPS 800 / CDMA 800. Same for TDMA.

GSM is the dominant standard in Europe and many other parts of the world, and so there are also dual-band and tri-band GSM "world" phones that support GSM 1900 and one or both of the European frequency bands.

I think the most free minutes I've used in one month is around 3000 (PCS to PCS was well worth it). Didn't go over the anytime allotment, either...I'm sure they were quite happy with me that billing cycle.

my sister used to use around 600-700 of our shared 1000 anytime minute plan. That was ALONG with about 3000 night/weekend minutes. We went over by $200 one month, and after making her pay the entire bill, she adjusted it to about 300-400 anytime minutes, and 4500 night/weekend.

verizon pays phone retailers $600 if a customer signs up a 2 year agreement. i'd imagine sprint pays similar... just shows you how much those things are worth... moral is: if you sign up for 2 years you should be able to get any phone you want free

my old Sprint PCS phone works on the US Cellular network. I don't have any service, but I can dial 411 and get automatically connected. Thus far, it hasn't showed up on anyone else's bill either :)

I'm sorry; I didn't mean to ignore this question. I'm not the authority, but I'll explain what I know.

It all boils down to Analog ("Cell" phone) vs. Digital (PCS = Personal Communications System)

Cell phones are analog (think 900MHz cordless phones) and are called such b/c you travel in and out of "cells" ie. broadcast areas with diff towers owned by differenet companies...you get the idea.

PCS is pure digital and many carriers can share the same frequencies. Also, you have MUCH more options/features w/PCS like caller ID, voicemail, etc.

That's what I know. Someone please correct/ammend as necessary. :)

uhhh most phones (GSM *DMA etc) are digital...

Yes.. and keep in mind.. it's unlimited data via vision.. NOT via a modem (usb/serial cable)
