holy crap thats an insane cap, how the hell do they expect to keep you under 1.5 gigs a week thats under 250mb a day

Kalvin00: you say your house in 3 day, i would be over that in about 12 hours

and thats without downloading anything illegal and such

Do tell, how do you average over 1.5 GB in 12 hours without downloading anything illegal?

well i frequent a bunch of forums, alot of them allow images to be posted, on a busy day that gets pretty insane

i assujme its includeing upload, and i upload pictures quite constantly to my website

game demos and linux ISOs also take care of that quickly

FTP installs are cheaper on the bandwidth if you're into Linux. And they're easier.

wow. what U? is there a bandwidth cap though? what's your average download speed?

i wonder how that didn't get abused by students.

I'm not sure how it doesn't get abused. Amazingly the university hasn't capped any programs either. I know at UW bittorrent and kazaa are both capped. My rated download speed is 3mb/sec. But I average around 1.

Hehe, I just downloaded 120GB last night at an average speed of around 5MBps (yes, Megabytes, and that can get as high as seven or eight). We also have a bandwidth policy of 5GB upload + download total from Monday to Sunday night, but we also have a DC hub that is an on-campus computer with other on-campus people connected, meaning none of that counts toward the bandwidth usage :D:evil:

Teehee as long as you don't violate copyrights, MIT gives you free reign online. Unlimited access baby. I can't even benchmark what my bandwidth is since its always larger than the testing server. I'd estimate around 40mbit though :D

Hmmmmmmmm

If it is anything like my university, they have a database that shows what port on the switch goes to which jack, and where that jack is located. Back when I was in IS&T Networking, we could tell you what the last file you transferred was... which led to several interesting conversations with people about users FTPing porn. But I digress. It takes about 45 seconds between when a Networking member looks at your bandwidth usage to when they send a "shut" command to the switch. After which, you can enjoy your lack of internet service until they decide to turn it on. And requests for restoration of network access to people who have ignored warnings can get "lost" extremely easily.

Seriously, fighting IS&T is pretty stupid. They have your name (literally). They have your jack number. They have your port number on the switch/router. They know which room you are in. They know your IP. They know your MAC. You think you are going to win... how? Your bandwidth probably hasnt been limited yet because they are still busy showing profs that in order to use their laptop and the network in a classroom, they need to plug their ethernet cable into the jack labelled "Network", and not into the side of the thermostat (yes, I did have to show several teachers that... yes, the classroom thermostats do have RJ45 jacks, but those are for programming them, not network access). After they get back to normal, they will see your connection, see that you have been warned, see that you have not lowered your usage, and throttle your connection. If not kill it.

Now, if you dont like your campus bandwidth restrictions, go complain to the president. IS&T sets caps because they want to provide useable connections to everyone. Increase the amount of bandwidth the university purchases, and IS&T will raise the caps, if not remove them.

Talk to someone who was in the dorms at Case Western. An individual Gigabit connection for every person in the dorms, and a pipe to the outside to back it up.

Blech, i think i was limited to 6GBs a week as well. Needless to say, i violated that and they shut off my connection for about a week.

I had a friend that violated it twice! First offense is a week off. Second is also a week, but you need to speak to a peer review board in order for it to be reactivated. Third offense gets you kicked out of the dorms. Lame huh?

Policies like these are serious "bullshit" . Universities need to suck it up and freaking buy fatter pipes. I agree that there need to be limits if the university is trying to serve 200 kids on a T1, but the real issue is that they need to buy bigger pipes. For 10,000-40,000 $ a year they can afford to

Edit: they *should* be able to afford it at least

They could shut off the power to pay for it too.

Please tell me how the HELL are you kiddies are downloading in excess of 5 gigabytes per DAY???? Good lord in the morning, I could've sworn that the tuition money that you're paying (or your parents in some cases) is going towards an education. Not towards you downloading every mp3,movie,etc. that you can get your hands on. I just don't get it, I have a high speed connection and I download game demos (have to d/l the WoW stress test yet), the occasional linux ISO and some movies. On average I download a few gigabytes per month but not PER DAY. Frankly I kindof hope that the OP not only gets his connection yanked for a week but they also ban his computer from wireless access as well, it really wouldn't be too hard to do you know.
