Here is an email i got:

Dear Housing Resident,

The following message is regarding your ResNet network connection. It is important that you read this email thoroughly. You are not required to reply to this message.

Your computer is in violation of the ResNet Bandwidth Policy. When you first registered your computer on the ResNet network, you agreed to abide by the University and ResNet Appropriate Use Policies. This policy limits you to 5 Gigabytes (GB) of off-campus Internet traffic in any 7 day period. This is measured as a total of both your incoming (downloads) and outgoing (uploads) traffic.

Since your computer has used more than 5 GB of bandwidth in the last 7 days, your connection speed for off-campus Internet traffic has been temporarily reduced to a 56K dial-up speed. This limit does not apply to any on-campus traffic, such as WiscMail email or connecting to other campus computers. Your full connection speed will be restored after your 7-day average bandwidth usage has dropped below 4 GB.

So then i tested my bandwidth and this is what i got: bandwidth
For OMG1Penguin:
Beyond 15mbit, the test results are not reliable and cannot be recorded.

Until they correct the problem im maximizing my bandwidth usage, take that bandwidth nazis :p

EDITED:
FYI: im averaging about .9GB a day so its not like im raping the system

Broken ass internet can't get to the site, can you quote?
Thanks~

"dial up 56k speeds"
That would be roxxor if when you opened up IE, it went to an internal site that had an AOL dialer-lookin picture with modem sounds in the background that you had to listen to before you were able to get anywhere else.
"DIAL THIS UP PUNK COLLEGE KID!" they would giggle.

You've been at UW less than a week and you managed to violate the usage policy already?

Each wall jack connects to a port on a managed switch. All they need to do is disable the switch port, which can be done remotely, and he's gone. Total of about 30 seconds of work.

You have no idea how lucky you actually are...
2nd Limit Violation for Downloading Activity - 56K restriction until Saturday

You have exceeded the 1.5 gigabyte weekly download limit (to sources outside of
the psu.edu domain) and are in violation of the Residence Hall Network
Connection Acceptable Use Policy.

This is your second violation and your Network Connection speed has been
restricted to 56Kbs (kilobits per second) until Saturday at midnight. If you
violate this policy a third time (for uploads or downloads), your Network
Connection speed will be restricted to 56Kbs (kilobits per second) for the
remainder of the semester. If you have not already contacted your ResCom or
local campus computing office about this matter you need to do so as soon as
possible.

If you are unsure why your machine is using this amount of bandwidth and why
your connection speed has been restricted please review the list of frequently
asked questions (FAQs) regarding the bandwidth limitations at:
http://www.rescom.psu.edu/pages/bandwidthfaq.htm or contact your ResCom or local
campus computing office.

Acceptable Use Policy please see:

You realize how easy it would be to e-mail ResNet at University of Wisconsin and let them know about Ryan Linder's opinions on their policies? I don't know how you retards get into college.

And add to that email: Ryan says fix the system. (But if you know anything about ResNet you would realize that is an impossible task for them.)

when did you get the e-mail? it's probably just because the cap is not into effect until Sunday (beginning of next week) or something like that.

if you keep abusing the bandwidth though, you better get ready and buy a wireless ready laptop if you don't have it already. you're gonna need it if they cut you off permanently. :)

i don't know, have they provide wireless connection in dorms yet? if not you're probably close to a building that has connection anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem. ;)

According to the new rules, you are. The new rules state that an average usage 0.71GB/day are allowed for any 7 day period and last I check 0.9 > 0.71 so adjust your usage accordingly. Do you really need that last 200mb/day?

With the new registration system you can't even attempt to blame your roommate for the usage anymore, so they know its you. Why risk fighting with the same people that you're trying to get an education from?

well i frequent a bunch of forums, alot of them allow images to be posted, on a busy day that gets pretty insane

i assujme its includeing upload, and i upload pictures quite constantly to my website

game demos and linux ISOs also take care of that quickly
