Take a look at this engine, can it really be 250hp?

Engine

Descrip from seller is:
the motor only has 28,000 on new motor and clutch . leather interior one of a kind .alarm, poppers shaved handles, custome rear lic plate lots of extras injen cold air intake new tires and rims type r trans, raceing clutch, short shift, chipped ecu

Car is a 1993 HONDA CIVIC DX, not sure what kind of engine but it's definitely not the stock one. Does that look like it could pull 250hp?

edit: I ask because I am probably going to buy this car, but don't want to get swindled here. What question can I ask him and if he doesn't respond fast I'll know something is up?

Once again, it's a new engine put in there, not the regular civic one.

With nitrous and/or turbo, sure.

The question is: why would you want to buy a car that's been beat to hell and modified back?

intake, chip. nothing that would indicate 250 hp.

I have no idea how you could get 250hp out of that.

N2O stickers are on the other side.

Looks as if there may be a supercharger, doesn't seem to be an intercooler (can't tell though). I'd just ask for a dyno sheet.

uhmm, that civic should get 90ish stock, so 160 in improvements would be tough, on such a tiny engine, I think..

but then again im no car person.

Too bad the picture isn't bigger. Maybe a JDM D16A? There are tons of bolt-on aftermarket parts for the Civic, so I see no problem with that enging making 250hp.

It doesn't seem extremely bogus to me, as long as the owner knows what they are doing. Many four-cyls these days are getting up towards 275HP with FI.

It's not forced induction, it's naturally aspirated and no claimed internal engine mods. The only way he's getting 250hp out of a civic engine is through significant block modifications.

No supercharger, no turbo. Cold air intake.

Chip might give him 20-25, CAI maybe 5.

Even if he had the GSR engine, there is no way.

Honda's performance 4 cyl's are all dual over head cam. This engine looks like it's single over head cam... with a distributor cap at the end. Doesn't look big enough for two cams there. You can see the manifold has no turbo, the exhaust pipe just attaches to it and disappears under the car. If you look at the intake manifold it looks like he put some kind of hard pipe/cold air intake system. No supercharger. I highly doubt that engine makes 250hp... it takes more then some purple and blue hoses and a hard intake pipe to make horsepower.

Chip will not give 25 without other supporting mods. Chip maybe 10, with a freeer exhaust and intake, amybe 25 properly tuned.

That motor either has to A) be stroked/bored or b) forced fed to be making 250 crank hp, much less wheel.

Why not drive it, 250hp in a civic will fell a lot different than 115 hp in a civic.

Take it to a tuner shop and get their appraisal

Frankly I'd even take the oil out of it and get a Used Oil Analysis done.

You don't want to buy a car like this without a LOT of research, otherwise it could blow up on day 2 and your sale sheet says "As is."

It is possible, highly unlikely. I don't see forced induction, I don't see any radical exaust/intake combos, hell, I doubt it has a different cam!

It looks like it's on nitrous, possibly a direct port setup? The pic is really tiny so it's kinda hard to tell though, but it might be a direct-port nitrous setup with grounding wires that match in color.

I'd ask for dyno sheets and probably a better pic than that.

Is there just some technical straightforward question I can ask him real quick to see if he's lying or not? I am gonna drive it of course but it's a ways away and don't want to go out there for nothing. He owns or works at a body shop and has warrantied it for a year free labor if anything goes wrong. I think it's a sweet deal. But I'd still like to be able to confirm a few things.

What I'm looking for is, a question about the engine I could ask to confirm it's power... like if someone claimed they were an avid ATOT'er I could ask them who is the Grand Nagus and they'd reply RossMAN right away. If they didn't right away I'd knew they probably weren't.

if you go 0-60 in less than 6 seconds, you have a winner.

Yeah, but when that VTEC kicks in yo. It's just like having a large turbo, but better.
