Is this a good deal? Is it worth the extra few dollars to have Taiyo Yuden? OfficeMax is offering 100 Verbatim DVD-R for $22.99 at the moment. What do you get with Taiyo Yuden that you do not get with any other? Higher reliability?

You just said it yourself. I have wasted many hours re-burning DVDs on TY blanks due to read failures from many name brands: Maxell, Verbatim, TDK, Sony, etc. Those companies don't make the blanks, they just OEM from cheapest sources. TY is the only brand I have used that has not failed me yet and I have burned just over 100 TY blanks.

I just picked up the OfficeMax 100 pack Verbatim DVD+R and the media code for those is MCC004. I was hoping to get TY03 but no luck. MCC is pretty good, but it has failed me before. If you want long-term reliability, spend the extra 3 bucks and buy the real-deal.

Yes, I've been using them for years without a problem. TY are worth a few extra cents per disc for reliability, longevity and compatibility.

Could be useful info, do you have any verifiable data/links to back that up?

MCC is good quality media, here is a good reference list for media DigitalFAQ. Furthermore, Rima is a reputable company with good pricing, even if they are my competitor. :)

MMC is good, but I doubt it's better than TY. So far, TY's have been universally acclaimed for quality and reliability, no small feat in today's world.

MMC quality is variable depending on where it was made. Yes it can scan as good as TY, depending on where it was made. But TY always scans great, period.

Another question about these TY's: the deal as posted is for 8x media. Can 8x burn faster than 8x? say 12x? That's how fast i usually burn 16x media in Nero.

TY is 2nd to none but you can get these other places that take GCO - it ends up being like $16-17 shipped. Search taiyo yuden on SD.

It really depends on your burner. I buy strictly TY DVD-R 8X because they are cheap (got mine with the google check out a while ago for $15 bucks or .15 cents a piece) and they do over burn on my NEC 3550A. They actually burn at 12X instead of 8X so its like buying 12X dvds! Not all burners will burn the TY's at 12X, you'll have to do some research on that. For the reliability issue, I've never EVER had a failed burn at 12X. I've gone through about 4 of these 100 packs and I love them.

Thanks! I'm in for a few hundred TY.

I was running low on my TY blanks so I bought in on the Verbatim 100 pacs @ Office Max.

I really like the TY disks too but, alas, they are the only ones I've had read failures on.

TY01 about 2 years old read fine one week and the next week, numerous failures. They were about 2 years old.

I had good luck w/the Verbatim DL so I'm giving their SL another try also(That's what I used prior to TY with no disc failures so far.

I agree TY is fine stuff I also agree Verbatim is fine stuff too. None of them are what we were led to believe they would be years ago, however. For what's really important, I always make a backup of the backup, now.

For longevity of fast print important documents, paper is still my most trusted medium.

hmmmmm...TY making any paper?

Good disks, though! Thanks!
