A little under two years ago there was an earthquake in Taiwan and within a couple of weeks RAM prices had jumped by a factor of two to four at least. Back around '93 a glue factory that provided 10% of the glue used to attach the DRAM core to the package was destroyed. RAM prices went sky high right afterwards.
