TaiSol 760092 vs. Stock AMD AthlonXP cooler

Which should I use? For the past year I've been using the TaiSol 760092 and I've had an 80mm fan mounted right near it (not mounted on it - I kinda jury rigged it ;)) and it has kept my 1.4GHz Tbird cool enough and 100% stable. Now I have an AthlonXP 2500+ (Barton core) and I'm wondering whether to use the TaiSol on that or just use the stock cooler?

Thanks.

That's the Palomino core though.

The 2500+ Barton core gives off 53.7 watts (typical), 68.3 watts (max) whereas the 1.4GHz Tbird gives off 64.7 watts (typical), 72.1 watts (max). So it should be fine.

However, I don't know if the stock cooler is better than the TaiSol, which is 2 years old.

the Taisol is way better than the stock. You could add a more powerful fan to it to increse the performance. Although the stock fan should be fine for the 2500+

The Taisol looks beefier than the Barton hsf which only has a small copper insert in it. The fan on the barton is relatively quiet, however.

I put the Barton hsf on my 1.4GHz tbird and put the TaiSol on my Barton with an 80mm fan rigged on it. Both are rather quiet.

Things seem to be going well. :)

Thanks.

No idea how good the stock HSF is for that cpu, but GCK760 is doing a fine job on my 2400xp, used it's stock fan aswell as my 60mm YS-Tech and got similar temps. Would actually switch back to the taisol fan but one issue is the screwholes on the hsf seem to have threaded - any simple suggestions on this, not requiring dremel-type shenanigans? superglue barely worked out :( was considering a bit of wood glued on (can test a 80mm this way too) but seems a bit, er, ghetto.

GCK760 got "reccomended" on dans cooler roundup too. TBH though over here the price between OEM and retail XP's is very little, maybe worth the extra just for the warranty - can then just try + compare the two HSF performance/noise.

By the way, the Barton hsf is keeping the Tbird at about 45`C when just tooling around - email, internet, AIM. I won't bother stressing it seeing as it will never get stressed - it's now my mom's computer.

The TaiSol is owning the 2500+. :p According to Motherboard Monitor the CPU is running at 35-36`C under normal usage (internet, email, etc). I didn't believe it so I used the Soltek Hardware Monitor and it reported the same thing! I'm now running Prime95 stress test on that rig (have been for maybe 6-8 minutes) and the temp is at 46`C...I'll report back in another half hour and see if the temp is any higher.

By the way, the 2500+ is in an Antec Sonata case - not exactly known for it's cool conditions. :)

BTW I gather the Antec Sonata IS known for its cool conditions - if you put a low rpm 120mm intake fan on (that they should have included anyway imho).

It's not known for it's cool conditions out of the box. There isn't much in the way of intake. The front area under the bezel can be modded to allow for more airflow and some other minor mods that don't really compromise the quietness of the computer, but out of the box, from what I've read, it isn't exceptional. It's not bad by any means, but people don't buy it because it stays cool - it doesn't have particularly great airflow.

Anyway, after running prime95 for about an hour it topped out at 47`C. :)

So...I could overclock this mofo. And I think I will do just that sometime soon.

My Barton 2800 cooler had no such copper insert? Just a standard looking thin fined aluminum cooler with an actually less powerfull fan than my 1800 Palmino had. That said I just slapped a Vantec Aeroflow on it and wow that's a nice cooler. :D

try use 3M double sided tapes or a small zip tight.
