Tainted Love

As with most songs, I prefer the original version.
It seems to me that covers never seem to hit that certain "Sweet Spot" the originals had.
I'm sure there are exceptions, I just can't think of any ATM.

I'd say Korn's cover of "Word Up" and No Doubt's cover of "It's My Life" are two of the rare exceptions (and I otherwise hate Korn and No Doubt). Neither of them stray far from the originals, but they do manage to improve on the overall sound IMO.

And as for "Tainted Love", the extended Soft Cell version is easily the best.

Billy Idol

"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb. It was originally recorded in 1964 by Gloria Jones, and later made popular when covered in 1981 by Soft Cell. It has since been covered by numerous other groups.
Gloria Jones' original version is played on the in-car radio in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

DOH!
I thought for sure that Soft Cell did the original!

Maybe I should rephrase my statement to say that the first version you hear imprints the "Favorite" version in your head(?)

Anyway, I prefer Soft Cell's version!

I really like Korn's Word Up...just something about it all comes together for me.

95% of the time, the cover of a song doesn't even come close to the original. I don't even typically like Manson much (Don't hate him, just not a big fan) but I'm going to have to say in this case mansons version does more for me. I like how its a little harder and more industrial sounding.

And this is really going to get people groaning...but I like his cover of "Personal Jesus" about as much as the original. He just does decent covers IMO.

Manson vote here. I like metal a lot. So for my taste Manson took a crappy song and made it kick ass. What more could you ask for?

I must not have the Spin the Dial where they did that one. Where might I locate this one, got a date or anything?
