As with most songs, I prefer the original version.
It seems to me that covers never seem to hit that certain "Sweet Spot" the originals had.
I'm sure there are exceptions, I just can't think of any ATM.
"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb. It was originally recorded in 1964 by Gloria Jones, and later made popular when covered in 1981 by Soft Cell. It has since been covered by numerous other groups.
Gloria Jones' original version is played on the in-car radio in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

I'd say Korn's cover of "Word Up" and No Doubt's cover of "It's My Life" are two of the rare exceptions (and I otherwise hate Korn and No Doubt). Neither of them stray far from the originals, but they do manage to improve on the overall sound IMO.
And as for "Tainted Love", the extended Soft Cell version is easily the best.
