IRVINE, CALIF. Mexican-quick-service leader Taco Bell has rolled out a $9.99, 12-item "Grande Meal." aimed at tapping the QSR takeout-dinner market.

Marketed at Taco Bell's 5,000 domestic restaurants with the tag line "More food than necessary...when more food is necessary," the Grande Meals bundle a choice of 10 seasoned-beef tacos - either crunchy or soft shell - or bean burritos regularly 69 cents each: a Nachos BellGrande, regularly $2.29: and Mexican Pizza. regularly $2.29.

Is this the same thing? Looks like 12 items?

Not a Taco Bell fan, but I will defend them on this one. Silica is in most spices you buy at the grocery store, so odds are the food you cook has silica as well. Just passes through the system, as long as the particles are bigger than ~1 micron.

This is completely false. The truth is that what has been referred to as "sand" is in fact silicon dioxide. Silicon dioxide:

  • is a safe, common food ingredient often used in spices, seasonings, and many restaurant and packaged foods;
  • is primarily used in food to prevent ingredients from sticking together;
  • Is a naturally occurring mineral, often found in water, leafy green and root vegetables, cooked dried beans, whole grains, cereals, and fruits;
  • Can be found in many kitchen pantries across America, often in mashed potato and rice mixes, coffee, soups, and many spices and seasonings;
  • Is approved for use in food by the Food and Drug Administration here;
Like many in the food business, we use silicon dioxide in the seasonings and spices for our taco meat. When cooked, our beef contains about .0005% (that is, five ten-thousands of one percent) of this ingredient, far less than the FDA limit of 2%. Furthermore, we use certified organic silicon dioxide. It is not artificial and is not a preservative.
...

I am, however, glad that they refrain from using pesticides in growing their silica. I wonder how they keep the locusts away?

:awe:

My neighbor said he saw them throw out an old container of meat there once that read, "Grade 6: Fit for Human Consumption."

Safe, brah!

What is wrong with you people that you cannot eat taco bell? Thousands if not a few million people eat it everyday. Sure, the first time you eat it, your insides hurt, but then eventually that subsides. Whatever died was probably the bad part of you anyway.

Funny if not insightful ...

The two main points I take away from this entertaining and educational thread are:

1. There is plenty of info to point to the fact that the OP wasn't able to intellectually master what constitutes a "Grande Meal" and lost an epic, drive-through battle of wits with a couple of minimum wage TB drones who helpfully tried to enlighten him.

2. All this TB fear and loathing is grossly (no pun intended) unfounded. They use organic sand to bolster their mystery meat. Organic, bitches, organic! 😛

People laugh.... but the FDA actually allows only one method of "manufacture" for food grade SiO2. Getting it off the beach isn't it lol.

Whoa! Last time I said that Taco Bell food is disgusting, I got flamed right out of the thread. Posting here since finally I found people who agree.

sure, if your a cheap fuck. Go to a restaurant, the burger is better.

A) The word is "you're"
B) Restaurants take a lot of time, cost several times more, aren't always THAT much better tasting depending on the restaurant, and usually are considerably more calories. Seriously, have you ever looked at a restaurant's nutrition facts? It makes McD look rather tame.
C) Your elitism is quite saddening.

Thats why you work in the industry, 50% of my restaurant and %25 in the biz discount card for other restaurants in the area.

Eat like a king for $10 including tip= win.
