Taboo (TV series)

Homerboy

Lifer
Anyone catch the premier episode yet? It technically airs on FX tomorrow the 10th, but it's actually a BBC series and episodes air on Saturdays there (likley with a little less editing too?). Anyways, the premier episode was damned awesome -- right up my alley. Tom Hardy was awesome. Everyone was awesome. The atmosphere was awesome. Time setting awesome. Storyline was awesome. Loved it.

What's it about? I've seen the teasers but it doesn't really explain anything.

From Wiki:

In 1814, James Delaney reappears in London, a changed and haunted man, presumed dead in Africa many years before. His return finds his father, Horace Delaney, dead and a country at war with France and the United States. Set to inherit what is left of his father's shipping empire, James' arrival not only threatens to disrupt the plans of his half‐sister Zilpha and her husband Thorne, but also the political ambitions of the mighty East India Company, chaired by Sir Stuart Strange.

Well, saw it and...I am on the fence about it. It is going to take a few more episodes to see where this series goes.

Saw the first episode and really liked it. Deliciously dark, brooding and mysterious, great sets and characters. Has the feel of Penny Dreadful.
Some people in it were also in game of thrones.
Hope it doesnt wimp out.

I liked Penny Dreadful but it always felt kind of haphazard to me. This looks focused and purposeful. They dropped enough clues about supernatural elements that I'm intrigued as long as they deliver, which I think they will. It looks like Delaney is going to be challenged in the next episode and I think we'll see something interesting in his response.

Thorne seems one dimensional but I like all of the other characters. Loved the acting. It bothered me a little bit that Delaney seem to be omniscient but on another level I rather liked that he was able to the suits to go f* themselves.

Ep2 is just as good as Ep1. Really solid show thus far.
Bummed it's just the 10 part miniseries, but maybe that is for the best.

is it good or is this just another show where people are blinded by the setting and think it's good because it's dark

I think it's a combination of factors. I love dark themes and period dramas so it's hard for me to distinguish but objectively I think it's quite good. For example in the last episode there was a scene where the main character
dream ravages his sister. And although it's not graphic it's done so well it may as well be.
. It's things like that that make the show exceptional. It's not so much what actually happens but the suggestion of what might happen.

The overall setting, theme, environment, and to some extent cinemetography/camerawork/effects all are fantastic.
Acting overall seems really good.
The story arc as a whole, Im not sure if its crap or good yet, but, each of the first 4 episodes I have seen all have then makings of a good film.

The writing is the only thing Im not sure if im sold on.

I'm going to go back and give this show a try probably after it is done airing. I fell asleep during the first episode. It was really slow and just didn't engage me like I was hoping it would.

Wife and I enjoy it so far. Got really good after last episode. Never know about shows like this, we tried Frontier and was meh. These short mini series can be hit and miss so often.

agree 100% of all of this. The writing is the weakest link I think only because all the others are SO STRONG. Taken by itself, the writing is still better than 90% of the drivel on TV.

Good question. It's a bit of a comic book hero and story set in 1812, with a mixture of historical facts thrown in. And lots of mud and dirt and dark rooms lit by candles.

That said, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Some questionable plot turns that I wonder about. See spoiler.

Why did the Americans decide to kill him, and then pretty much just as quickly decide not to? Why would he leave the body at the farm to be discovered? Sure, he likes to leave his mutilated victims for everyone to see, but that's taking quite a risk of exposing the operation there.

Why not just steal gunpowder instead of saltpeter? Could it possibly have been more heavily guarded, given how many men they had to kill and avoid?

Ugh, I don't want them to drag this out. Part of the allure is that it's short, finite. Too many times producers get greedy.

The Americans might still kill him according to the woman hosting the party. Re the salt peter, my guess is that stealing that only involved a crime against the East India Company whereas stealing gunpowder would have involved going up against the British army. They'd be hanged either way but the EIC was probably a much easier target, relatively speaking.

If the writers have the imagination it can still be good. The problem is that too often they don't and the second or third season is just a swan song to milk the advertisers. I fear that the next season of Mr. Robot is going to be like that.
