Yesterday I got lost looking for a soccer field where my grand daughter was playing soccer. I printed out directions and maps from Google maps to use but sadly the directions were not detailed enough to be accurate. For example one of the roads I was on after missing a turn would have taken me to my destination. But I didn‘t know that because the maps I printed only showed small areas. .
Now,,,,,, is there a tablet out there with the gps feature that would be as detailed as a normal hand held gps?
I don’t travel enough to justify the cost of a gps unit. But,,, if I could buy a tablet with built in gps that would justify the extra expense and I would have a item that my wife and I and grand kids can use at home.
The perfect tablet would be able to show points of interest and have software that can be updated for free!!! Now I sound like a cheap ole penny pinching retiree! LOLOL
Any and all thoughts and input is appreciated.
Thanks

Many tablets have GPS, the issue is also needing data to get at the maps. So you could get a 3g/4g tablet and add it to your cell phone plan, or if you already have a smartphone you could tether data, but I'm guessing you don't otherwise you would have just used your smartphone GPS in the first place. Or the 3rd option is a MiFi device, but that still means paying the cell phone company.

You can manually cache multiple big (100mb) chunks in Google Maps. One chunk should cover your local area -- you'd probably want more or a data connection for a real road trip though.

So yeah, Nexus 7.

You can actually save a few maps from Google maps and those work offline.
However the turn by turn navigation needs a data connection at least on start up so that it can figure out your route.

There are a few off line GPS navigation avaialb for android but they are not free.

Osmand. Free. Uses OpenStreetMaps, and I find it to be a pretty good app. Definitely better than some of the ones you pay for, especially considering some of the paid for ones couldn't even find a state park where I live.
