Tablets and note taking

I've used the ASUS VivoTab Note 8 for this. The stylus on that works really well, and I *love* OneNote. I ended up selling mine (accidentally scratched my screen), but I plan on getting another one or maybe a Surface Pro as soon as I have money to spare. I was never really an artist, but I'm doing more graphics related stuff now and the pen is useful for sketching out ideas before I work on my desktop.

Samsung's Note tablets and smartphones (only the ones with S-Pen support) and the Windows tablets with Wacom or N-Trig digitzers are worth it for notes. I would never get a tablet for note taking without a stylus or pen. Extremely useful not just for writing and sketching, but also if you do take any kind of math, science, or computer class where you have to write formulas. Unless you are a fast typist or have very good shorthand, note taking without a stylus will probably be more of a distraction or pain than useful. I wouldn't try to tap or use swipe keyboards - virtual keyboards aren't very good for extended periods of taking down notes.

If you have a tablet already and don't want to purchase another one, there are styluses out there that work with regular tablets, but I'm not sure how they compare to something with an actual digitizer. This might work well if you have an iPad.

Yup

Couldn't imagine taking notes on something without a digitizer though. Samsungs are about the only non-windows tablets I can think of that have a good stylus setup, but then you don't get OneNote. I use a Lenovo Helix at work and I really like it. Note taking is fine on a tablet with a proper digitizer.
 
I use the Samsung Note 10.1 (with the Wacom stylus) for class note-taking. That coupled with the Lecture Notes App works really well for me.

I picked up the tablet refurbished for $300, but you could even get it for $200 these days refurbished. I didn't really care about the low resolution. It's a great functioning tablet that meets my needs for classes.

Lecture Notes is a really powerful app that keeps me organized. You can have separate notebooks for each class. It's allows you to import pdf files and write on them. It also allows for easy pdf exporting of your notes if you need to print them to turn in homework.

I have a Galaxy Note 2 as my phone, so I have Lecture Note installed there as well. I don't take any notes on my phone, but it's there in case I need it. I also use an app called Dropsync to keep my Lecture Notes' backed up to my dropbox account and synced to my phone.
