Tablets and case drop protection

My 11yo has an Ipad mini 2 (with case that has a cover) and being his PITA self, he decided it was ok to walk around with it open - so it drops face-down on the brick floor outside and shattered the glass. Next day he jumps on the couch with it laying there and glass gets into his knee which required 6 stitches. If it wasn't for a doc friend, I'd be paying a $200 medical bill on top of that.

I'm going to repair it (side project) but anyway I'm looking at cases for his new Ipad mini 5 (returned a Nintendo Switch to get this thing so he can play Fortnite better). Most of the cases on Amazon are of the $10 variety with soft-magnetic close. Main question - do these covers even stay closed should you drop them from a certain height? Anyone have their tablets shatter even with a closed case protecting it? Should I be spending upwards of $25 on a case or are they pretty much all the same? I have to admit, even if he had his [non-magnetic] cover closed, it could easily have flown open by the time it hit the floor.

i'm sure you'll find a nice case for you ipad mini...can you slap him upside the head when he somehow busts it again?

Yeah... I already let my daughter know that I will NOT buy new a new iPad if she breaks the one she has now. She's already broke her old Android tablet, I want her to take care of this one. Sure, it was my fault for not having a good case on the old tablet, but still.

The real question is how I'm going to prevent her grandparents (who spoil her rotten) from buying her one if she goes crying to them when she breaks it.
 
These kids should be playing on cheap amazon fire tablets or similar so when they break (which is probably a matter of when not if), it won't hurt the wallet as bad...
 
You gotta teach your kids to be more responsible. When I was a kid, I never broke my Gameboys or Game Gear, and if I did, my parents certainly wouldn't buy me a replacement. You broke it? Too bad. Go read a book, a magazine, watch TV, play NES, ride your bike, rollerblade, play basketball, climb some trees, etc.

11 is definitely old enough for him to mow some lawns or do chores.

Kids these days... 🙄

Tell her she'll be toting an ass whipping if she does. And you might should have a conversation with them. Long story but when my kid was 3 or 4, I told the father in law that he wouldn't keep him again if he didn't stop buying him crap. Wife called me and said that I hurt his feelings. Response: So? Better than my kid's ass because because he throws a rod when I don't buy him a new toy every time we go to the store.

My daughter used to have one of the $49 Fire tablets, but it was so damn slow and flaky and it drove me nuts trying to figure out why certain YouTube videos wouldn't play on it.

I guess that my sanity was worth the extra $150 for an iPad 🙂
