Tablet resolutions 1280x800 vs 1024vs768 - Is it a major difference?

I'm looking to purchase a tablet in the 10" size and I'm curious how the difference in resolution would impact reading novels, comic books, games, etc.. Obviously the 1280x800 will allow for more real estate but if I opted for the smaller resolution (purely because of pricing) I wonder if it would matter all that much.

Anyone out there have the luxury of playing with both resolution sizes? What's your opinion?

Assuming that both devices are the same size, the one with the higher resolution will provide sharper text. If the devices are not the same size, the one with the highest resolution will provide sharper text.

Aspect ratio may also be important if you really want to get into it. 3:4 is closer the dimension of an actual paper book novel or comic book reading from a landscape view, but 16:10 is better for viewing a single comic book page when in portrait.

If you really want high quality wait until devices with newer, high resolution displays start shipping in the near future. Most people think Apple will offer devices as early as March and Samsung will probably have something with a similar quality display between February and Q3 depending on which rumors you believe.

Aspect resolution is the real difference; but in about 3 months resolution will more than double (ipad 3, samsung 11 inch). If your target is movies I'd go with 16:10.

Aspect ratio. Pixel density is higher for the wide screen but not terribly so. Personally, for a 10" tablet, I would prefer the 3:4 ratio.

I'm really interested in reading comics on the tablet. I have several thousand comic books I want to sell, looking forward to going all digital with my collection.

I think pixel density has been a non-issue on phones since WVGA, but holy cow could it still use a bump on tablets.

My Prime looks great (colors, etc), but the noticeable pixelation on fine text is jarring. And not just compared to my new Galaxy Nexus, but compared to my old Fascinate. 19*12 would be much better -- at least in tablet (not laptop) mode.

I actually agree with this. Just compared to my SGS2 things look noticeably worse on a Prime.

With that said, until Android has a GPU that can play games at 1080p like my Prime plays them at 720p I don't mind as much.
