I'm working with one here at work...they are a very good invention...I would think they could help a LOT in college for note taking...no need for paper with Windows Journal there :p Small, portable, very easy to get used to...too bad they are pretty expensive :(

Edit: Anyone know where I can get one for under $1000?

Definitely for classes like math or science, it's hard to type out the notes. The problem I see is that if there is an open note test, can you use your tablet :p.

the other problem I have with it is that I don't write quite neatly with a pen that slides around the screen. Lack of friction. Same with signing for packages or credit cards at gorcery store.

I guess it just takes getting used to...my handwriting is very messy on paper..but with the note-recognition software..it converts it right to text so I dont have a problem...I really wish I could get one for college...:(

I have two different Tablet PCs, the first one since they first came on the scene about two years ago. You very quickly get used to the proper "feel" needed to write on the screen.

I think they are amazingly useful in many applications but not necessarily for everyone. Some people only need a desktop.

I'm probably going to get a nice raise next year for finding ways to work TPCs into what we do with great cost savings, so I'm a bit biased.

There are plenty of models like that.

Off the top of my head the Acer C300 series is precisely that.

Example

my friend was a MS rep at college. he got one of the first tablets ever released and presented it to us. it was so cool. however, after that one single presentation, i never saw a tablet PC again.

i guess it just didn't catch on.

typing on a keyboard is definitely faster for notetaking but the other factors such as drawing (copying) illustrations become a problem. There's still no good solution for the classroom IMO (not that I'm there anymore).

I don't know that there are any under $1000, cheapest I ever paid for one was $1400 or so.

I personally don't care for them, the ones I've used all had low resolution screens (1024x768) & the pen isn't accurate enough to do anything other than very basic windows navigation or note taking.

I worked for a company that was obsessed with them, about 3/4 of their laptops were tablets. Very few people actually used them as such, but they kept shelling out for hardware that was very ill suited for their needs.

Oh well not my money I guess.

*sigh*...when the guy gave me this one to use he said it was an older one but it'd have to do...I see no problems with it whatsoever...maybe I could talk to them about buying it from the company? If they aren't going to use it...why not let an employee thats going into college buy it from them?

I have one which I was given for work use - a Toshiba model. It's OK; not fabulous. Has the swivel screen and all but I found writing on it to be a pain. Also mine didn't come with a built in cd-rom/dvd drive so if I want to use it I have to plug in the USB drive. It ends up almost being like an old Sony VAIO with all the peripherals plugged in.

It was also prohibitively expensive; around 3k if I recall. All that and the front cover of the cd-rom/dvd drive fell off within the first 3 weeks of use :disgust:

I might get one within a year, seems like it would be really nice for the work I'd use it for. Maybe an IBM model.
