Noob when it comes to tablets. Just looking for some advice from people use have tablets and game on them.

Looking to get either a 7" or 8" tablet primarily for gaming and emails. Wifi only, no cell needed. Thinking android as the iPad can get pricey. Would like to be able to use external microSD if possible.

I see a lot of different android OS's and never know if these can be upgraded or if you're stuck with that version. Don't know if the version even matters.

See many different processors as well so it's hard to compare.

Want upgrades? Google Nexus line is then way to go. Everything else is hit and miss. Unfortunately, cheapest Nexus 7 is $200 on sale at best buy. Usually $230.
If you don't care about upgrades, then you can pick up other makers like galaxy tab 4 7". Then you're most likely stuck with whatever they have now, up to one upgrade. But realistically, Nexus 7 is the best for the money due to awesome screen.

Not particularly, no.

The Nexus 7 and Tegra Note 7 are in your price range, but both are compromised (Nexus = limited storage, Tegra Note = low-res screen). The device you *want* is basically the $300 yet-to-be-released Shield Tablet.

There are also refurb deals that put the Tab Pro 8.4 in that sub-$300 price range, but the ultra-high-res is probably a negative if you mainly want to game (not enough GPU to push all those pixels quite as well).

The specs on the 4 sort of suck, as with all lower end Samsung tablets. I actually left out the best option for you now: the LG G Pad 8.3, which you can get for $215 refurbed at Groupon deals or $225 new (Google Play Edition) at Expansys. This is basically a 2013 flagship phone in tablet form... Snapdragon 600 quad core, 2gb RAM, 1080p (actually 1920*1200 because it's a tablet) and micro SD.

Asus memo hd 7" is under 150 has an mSD slot.

This is probably your best choice. Just make sure you get the Memo 7 ME176, the newest model with the Intel Atom Z3745 processor. Not last year's model Memor HD 7 ME173 with the Mediatek processor.

Intel must being giving low end tablet manufactures amazing deals on it's Atom processors, because I'm seeing really cheap tablets replace last years Rockchip and Mediatek processors with much better Intel Atom Baytrail processor.

While most of the specs on this $150 are not that good. The Z3745 will provide much better CPU and GPU performance than what you'd normally find in sub $200 tablets.

PS. However just keep in mind there are other factors that will impact gaming performance like RAM and eMMC performance. And these cheap tablets have only 1GB of RAM and likely slow eMMC. But still, for the price, probably about as good as it'll get.

Thank you for the info on the Memo.
This one looks interesting as well:
ASUS MeMO Pad 8 ME181C-A1-WH

Nexus 7 @ 229 wouldn't be too bad. With the 8 possibly coming out in the fall there may be some discounts coming on these.

Go for the Tegra Note. Yeah it's only 720p, but it's got HDMI-out so you can plug it into a TV if you want to.

Refurbished Nexus 7 (2013) models come up pretty regularly for 130 (16gb) and 160 (32gb). No microsd, but they support usb otg.
