If it were me I'd post on the for sale/ for trade forums here looking for a rooted Nook color, you can probably pick one up really inexpensively.I'd put a really sturdy case on the Nook, you'd have a tablet that would be enjoyable for your child that would also be useful for you & your wife.

We actually already have one which we use regularly. I considered giving it to her and buying myself an N7 but tougher to convince the wife I need another $200 tablet.

I don't have any recommendations because I don't have any personal experience with cheap Chinese Android tablets.

I do have experience with iPads, iPod Touch, and iPhone...

Hmm. What's the word that screams out at me when I read this person's comment... on the tip of my tongue... oh yeah.

FANBOY!

<googles 'ipad production', news article comes out with 'Foxconn factory in China'>

In case anyone has forgotten, attacking other members by calling them fanboys is not going to be permitted

I personally don't believe that kids should "own" their own devices till they are at least 10 years old. Till they reach age 10, all devices they use should be "family devices" ie: they get to use apps that are selected by you & your wife for limited periods of time. If I had a young child I would invest in a larger good tablet for the family, put some apps on it for the 2 yr old. A second tablet would allow both you & the wife to enjoy reading in bed or different movies at the same time.

Btw, if it were me, I'd consider looking for a used iPad 2 on Craig's list as your family tablet, the App Store has slews of great educational & fun apps for the pre school kids & plenty of content for mom & dad too.
