One of the jokes in Back to the Future was based on Tab. When Marty goes into the Diner in the 50's and asks for a Tab and the guy says "you haven't ordered anything yet..."

Guy behind counter: Are you gonna order something kid?
Marty: Uh yeah. Gimme a Tab.
Guy behind counter: A tab? I can't give ya a tab unless ya order something.
Marty: Alright, gimme a Pepsi Free.
Guy behind counter: If you want a Pepsi pal, you're gonna pay for it.
Marty: Uhhh, just gimme something without any sugar.
(Guy behind counter pours him a cup of black coffee.)

For my taste Diet Pepsi wins out. Never did like Tab
and Diet Coke is just too sweet as far as my tastes.

That stuff's been around since at least the 70s.

IIRC, Tab is the original "diet cola," and has been around since the 1960's.

IMO, it's always tasted like shit.

It's not a Coke knock-off, it's a diet soda made by Coke, and has been around much longer than Diet Coke itself.

Oh, well so it is. The more you know. ^_^

It's still disgusting. Now that I know it's also a diet soda, that half explains the taste. I'd still rather drink Diet Coke or something, and that's saying a lot - I cannot stand diet soda drinks, regardless of formula on which they are based.
Used to drink pop like it was water, drank so much. Now I just realize it's a good tasty drink, full sugar, to have on occasion, or with booze.
