TA LAN party in Cleveland, anyone?

This a "what if" question at this point. If I were to have some open spaces at a LAN party, are there any team members in the Cleveland area who would be interested in playing? It would probably be on a Saturday from 2pm-2am, over 21 only (beer WILL be served, and most of my normal attendees ARE cops).

A date has not been set, and it depends on some changes in my work schedule, but I'm considering planning something early in October. I'm normally at capacity with about 12, so its only if I have openings, but last 2 tries, I went from 12 to only 2 players in a matter of 3 days.

Depending on when and where, and what games, I may be interested in driving up from Columbus if you have one, and maybe a place (sofa, shed, etc. motel room nearby) to crash for a couple of hours after it's over before the drive home. :)

I'm not sure if any of the other TA members here in Columbus are gamers, but if they are maybe we could car-pool. I don't drink much, so I would be willing to be a designated driver. :)

I don't know how I missed this thread, I ran across it looking for some other topic. :D

Ray,
I'm thinking maybe Sat. Oct. 7, but that depends on what happens with a job change that I'm waiting for a final word on. My current job I wont have a weekend off for at least 6 months, but the new one will be M-F. It may also mean some assimilation, but its much too early to talk about that.

If it were up to me, I wouldnt mind people staying over, but I'll be using my parents basement for this one, and while they might not mind a dozen drunk cops in the house, I doubt they would go for having strangers sleeping over. There are several hotels within a few minutes drive though.

I dont expect official word on the new job for 2 weeks, so I wont have a firm date for the LAN until then. I need to wait for basically a rubber stamp committee to approve the hiring, but I've already accepted their offer and been told the job wont go to anyone else.

My husband and I may be interested. We live in Columbus also, and my folks live in Hinckley. We're up there every few weekends anyway =)

Speaking of gaming, we may be heading over to Dave & Busters tomorrow..hehehe

Cleveland here. I'd be interested. I also have a group of people in the Cleveland area and we get together for LAN parties as well. Perhaps if we get my people and your people together, we can actually get a party going with 12 or so people. It is the same on this end. Get 20 people who express interest in coming then come the day 8-10 show up.

I'd also like to know what games. I love UT but will play anything that is available provided everyone else will play UT. The last party I went to there were 20 some people and they played Q3A Rocket Arena for 2 days and most would not play anything else so it was a drag.

Q3A gets the most play time with us, mostly just deathmatch, but occasionally some CTF. UT gets some play, and is my personal favorite, but it isnt real popular. Starfleet Command, Combat Flight Sim, Motocross Madness, and Midtown Madness all get some play time. NFS3 used to be popular, but we havent played that for over a year.

Like I said, though, the date all depends on when the new job starts, but Oct 7 is what I'm hoping for.

Current network equipment is 8 port Intel 10/100 switch, 5 port Linksys 10/100 switch, and 4 port SMC 10/100 hub, which means 13 comps, but I can borrow a 8 port 100 only hub to add to that. Table space for 12, but I know where I can borrow more.

Mandrill, I'm in Bedford, where are you at?

My last 2 parties had 8-12 planning to attend until about the last 24 hours before, and all but 2 cancelled on me both times.

I've played some Q3A single player, and I've got Motocross Madness too, that I still play occasionally. But UT is my favorite. :)

Depending on the timing of various projects at my work, I may be able to make it over there. I'm in Grand Rapids, MI and it would only be a 4.5 to 5.5 hour drive for me.. much closer than Iowa! Me, I'm a UT and Descent fan.. not much for Quake, but I do have access to more network equipment(thus the name) so I could easily bring along an additional 16port 100bT hub as well.

BTW, I'm curious.. what do your COP friends think about the MP3 issue??

Networkman,
I know at least one of them is scrambling to get everything he can before Napster gets shut down :) another was pissed about metallica's stance on it. It's not really something the local cops would worry about anyway. No different in most of their (and my) eyes than friends trading CDs, etc. I still cant get most of them to let me run the dnet client on their systems though because they aren't convinced it's legal. Go figure :)

I used to work with most of these guys, but I was only part-time and needed a fulltime job so I've been working in the corporate world for the past few years. Right now I'm an investigator for a greeting card company. Yeah, go ahead, laugh. :) We mostly deal with internal stuff, mainly stolen computers and the occasional MVA on the property. Definitely not your typical "rent-a-cops" though, over 80% of the guys in my dept. have college degrees, and about 10% either are or were in public law enfocement at some time. I should be out of the whole security thing by early Oct though. I accepted an offer from a local school district for a computer repair tech job, and I'm waiting for school board approval. Big pay increase :D

Thanks for the offer for the hub, we'll see what happens and if it would even be needed. I still need for the final word on when I start the new job first. Also not sure how many more people than 12 I can fit in the basement.

GSmith,
Maybe we can get some of us TA members up there for a LParty, and work on those guys to convince them once and for all to run RC5. :D

Engine,
I live in Westerville, work in Dublin, how about you? :)

Wow, I have definitely got to get off my butt and get the Columbus folks together.

Here are the Team Anandtech members that I know of that live in and around Columbus:

I lived in Dublin for about 12 years. I moved out of my parents place this summer after I graduated, and now I live in New Rome over on the west side, and work in Dublin.

You see the OSU game this weekend? How about them Redhawks! (I'm a Miami grad) :) I couldn't believe they actually made a game of it.

Engine,
If you are interested, we could get together for lunch someday, seeing as how we both work in Dublin. :)

And no, I missed the game this weekend, but I did hear that it wasn't the cakewalk OSU was expecting. :Q

Sounds good to me. Just let me know if you have a day and a place in mind, and I should be able to make it.

My wife goes to grad school at OSU, so we were at the game on Saturday. Pretty nice seats, too: in the South stands right up in the fifth row. I couldn't believe how good Mike Bath, Miami's quarterback was. I'd seen him play for the last three years at Miami's games, but I guess the attention was always on Travis Prentice there, so he never got noticed much. He made OSU's defensive linemen look like chumps on Saturday, though :)

Columbus Rocks

Where do y'all work around Columbus? I'm looking for a System/network admin job somewhere around here (Bit bored where I'm at now).

Anyone planning on going to any hockey games?

Shudder,
Are you in Columbus, Oh. too?

Bartman,
I added you to my list ^

Wow, there's even more people here than I thought. Some of the guys here at work are really into hockey, some have even played on leagues, and are definitely planning on attending some Blue Jacket games.

GSmith,
Didn't mean to turn this topic into a Columbus discussion. Looks like we could put together a pretty good Columbus Lan party too, although I still would be interested in a road trip to Cleveland, if anyone else from Columbus is interested, maybe we could car pool. :D

Columbus Ohio... I work right downtown too, so I can see the arena easily. Got my tickets today and everything. Whooo.

A columbus Lan party wouldn't be bad, but I don't play nearly as many games as I used to, and certainly not the "popular" ones except for UT. Plus I think my gf said if I ever went to a LAN party she'd dump me for being a complete dork for doing so :)
