TA.com Feedback Feature

Hey guys, Mika is working on a feature for TA.com to allow you to give feedback to news posts; however, he needs your input on something. He needs to alocate space for each feedback post somehow, and he doesn't know how big to make it. He can either give each feedback post a set size in characters, or use dynamic. A set size would limit you to a certain amount(say 1.5K chars) and possibly take up extra space, while the dynamic idea would make it so a search wouldn't be possile, and it's more resource intensive on the DB that would store it. So, he wants to know what you guys think; do you want a static size(and if so, how big), or go dynamic(but at a cost)? Any and all thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.😀

Hmmm...feedback to news posts...feedback to news posts...where have I heard that before? Oh, yes, feedback to news posts! 😉

Wouldn't it be easier to just auto-post the news items on this forum? Since Zuni added the non-logged-in-posting capability, it should be possible. Then just link to the article from TeamAnandtech.com. 🙂

The question is more of what field type to use to store comments in the db. By setting an upper limit to the number of characters, the db can store and retrieve the data much more efficiently, and there is the ability to do searches on that field. The only downside is that there is a limit to the number of characters. My opinion is that the field should be limited, however, I would like to know what everyone thinks would be a good number of characters.

Ken_g6: I'm interested to hear more about posting without being logged in. I think autoposting news articles would be great!

Mika, YGM! 🙂 Assuming your SETI address is still good.

I'm including a copy of the HTML you get when attempting to post a message when logged out, and a postscript man page about using PERL to work with HTTP. I'm fairly familiar with PERL, but not with internet protocols, so I hope you can put the two together.

I look forward to seeing your auto-posts. 🙂
