Found this linked on the IBM T40 forum:

IBM product announcement

September 8th is the planned introduction date. Price is expected to be $99 for the a/g card (well, a/b/g, but I call it an a/g because g implies b compatibility).

I was kinda hoping they would release an 802.11g only card for $50 or so. Maybe they will.

In the notes section it states:

ThinkPad models with integrated 802.11a/b functionality may not be upgraded with the 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter.

I can't figure out why that would be.

May be they refer to the security screws that they put on T40 model that have dual a/b wireless miniPCI. Other then that, everything is identical between the model with dual wireless and the b only. It is kind of silly of IBM to put the security screw on the one with 802.11a/b miniPCI since the TR7 screwdriver can be obtained easily from many local hardware or computer store.

If you refer to removing of the palmrest and change the miniPCI wireless card (physically), then yes and easily if you are familiar with removing/assebly electronic part. The compatibility IMO should not be a problem if it can be used with other regular T40 models (i.e., they all have physicaly the same connector, and share the same MB design.
