T1 Setup

I'm trying to troubleshoot a T1 at an elementary school. The circuit is up as I verified it with ISP. Here's what the setup appears to be:

2 phone lines into a box mounted on the wall.
From this box comes a big phone cable into a box labeled ADTRAN with a small status screen.
From this is a cable into a Cisco 1700 (router?).

After this there is a Linux box which I believe to be the DHCP server. I do not unfortunately have the login for this box. Out the 2nd nic is our big switch which connects all the computers.

I have all the IP address information and tried to manual assign my laptop an IP along with the other information and plug it directly into the Cisco 1700 and the internet is still not working.

Do I have my information correct? What can I do to try and troubleshoot this. A field technician is supposed to contact me sometime but I'd like to learn how this works. I would like to install a smoothwall box instead of the of the current server. Thanks for any links or input, much appreciated!

were you brought in as a consultant on this job? seems like your in over your head...

that Adtran box is a CSU/DSU...think of it as a high powered modem. more here

what port did you plug your computer into on the router? console / aux? not gonna work...

do you know how to console into the router? what is the line status of your serial interface? can you ping the isp side?

have you tried manually assign the ip address/subnet mask/gateway and attach your laptop to a switchport?

No, I'm just the computer guy for the school.

I plugged into the port labeled 10/100 Ethernet. I'm pretty sure this is how it was when it was working.

I sort of know how to console into the router but if you have a link that would be great. How would I check the line status of the serial interface?

I did not try to ping anything. Our DHCP server is handing out valid IPs.

I tried assigning an IP address, subnet, gateway, and dns to my laptop and I plugged directly into the Cisco router. When I did this I basically got "no connection". It was like the cable was not hooked up at all. Maybe I should have tried this through the switch.

amdskip, is the interface module in the 1700 a "WIC-1DSU-T1"? That's what you should have, but it's not clear why there's a CSU there. Maybe it's a MUX card or some wacky form of SmartJack?

Log into the router and do a "show interfaces" and post the result.

To test, you need to plug your modem into the LAN side of the adtran. From there you'll need the IP information that your T1 ISP gave you for that circuit.

I'd guess it's an old setup with just a serial card in the router and an external CSU/DSU. We've been needing a revamp of our WAN for a while and that's what setup we're using for the time being.

I'd also look at the status of the serial connection in the routers. Have you tried just rebooting the hardware? It's typically a bit much but I've got a flaky 2610 that likes to take itself offline every now and then. The only way to bring the T1 back up is to reboot the router.

I have tried rebooting all the hardware . The Adtran is not reporting any errors and it appears to be able to send/receive. I would guess that this was setup 5-7 years ago and has not been touched until now. I went in on Saturday and it was not working.

I will be working on this more later today. I will take pics of what is there and I am also contacting a field technician today. Thanks for all the input thus far!

Ok, I figured it out. Our DHCP server was SME server. It was still handing out valid IPs and appeared to be working from what I knew. I do not have the login for it. I hooked a machine directly to the cisco router and plugged in the IP info and it worked.

Solution: I setup a smoothwall box and it works great! Thanks for the help everyone!
