Speaking of the camera, any idea on does it have autofocus or just a normal one click camera?

I'm confused about something and didn't see anything about it mentioned in the posts above...

I was reading that the G1 phone would have free gmail access even to those persons who do not have a data plan. Would this mean, for example, that you could attach files to your gmail messages and download them free of charge? Could you also use other google features, like google docs and google maps free of charge?

Of course "I" personally would pay for a data plan but in case maybe a **ahem** "friend" doesn't want to, I'd like to get the scoop on the free gmail feature if anyone around here knows?...

1gig data limit has been lifted: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/...-cap-for-google-phone/

And good news about openness in the Android Market: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/...hone-at-least-for-now/

?Our ground rules are very simple,? he said. ?The application developer has to verify they are who they are. They have to certify the application does what it does. And they have to inform the user what the application does.?

What about a voice-over-Internet-Protocol application like Skype that would let a G1 user bypass T-Mobile?s network? That?s fine, he said.

?The device is already sold with a voice and data plan, so you can connect through T-Mobile anywhere in the world,? he explained. ?So we think we have already solved the hard part. If someone wants to write a voice-over-IP application that will allow additional ways to connect, that is something the platform will allow.?'

Looks much more exciting now.

I thought I had read that the G1 would support T-Mobile's HotSpots WiFi? My wife and I are on a T-Mobile plan where we both get the T-Mobile HotSpots at Home service. It was a little sketchy at first but after my wife replaced her 7-year old sim card with a new one the service has turned out to be fantastic for us.

I like that it is essentially an open platform. That means there are going to be many neat and useful apps. I'm sure there will be a lot of crapware too so hopefully finding the neat and useful stuff will be easy.

I'm having a hard time justifying the $25 data plan though.

Guys, check this out. It seems someone developed a solution for the Exchange sync problem. It's totally free. Probably they just needed PR :) It's just a guess. Anyway, I'm gonna try it.

the phone's ugly, they might as well called it the Sidekick Android. You have to have a Gmail account to use the internet features (if I read correctly...) I suppose an actual keyboard is nice, but this phone is a lot of fail. It *might* turn into a good phone down the road when there are tons of apps to download for it. But honestly unless you're a Apple hater, the iPhone is better on almost every front. The broswer looks horribly laggy, oh and T-Mobiles 3G is god awful.

the UI looks plain and clunky performance wise. Google and HTC is lucky there are Apple haters, because this phone isn't offering much new and doesn't improve on anything the iPhone offers. Multitouch would suck with it reacting to touch so much slower than the iPhone.
