T-Mobile/Motorola can't unlock my phone..

I have an old Motorola Razr v3 that I want to get unlocked. I called them and they said I would get an email in a day or so telling me how to unlock it. After 3 days, I got an email stating that they were unsuccessful in getting an unlock code for my IMEI and didn't provide any other steps on how to proceed.

How it is possible that they can't unlock a phone that they sold?

Should I try again? What else can I do? I'm not interested in paying money to another vendor to unlock it.

It's possible because they're in it for business. They sell you their branded phone, they want you to use it on their network. If you want to unlock the phone then you need to find alternative methods. In fact being a warranty service Rep for AT&T, I refer a lot of people over to the manufacturer because they give us NO information whatsoever about unlocking phones.

You might be able to find something online about unlocking it.. howardforums.com, google. etc..

Their email in fact did they say they were going to ask the manufacturer. So it's just strange that Motorola wouldn't have it either. I've been with T-mobile past my contract already.

Yeah man.. it sucks trust me I feel like an ass every time I have to tell someone to contact the manufacturer, in fact I'd much rather have the knowledge and just not follow the rules and unlock their phones, after all they paid the money for it, why can't you unlock something you paid for?

Unfortunately, they're in it for business, and the manufacturer is the only hope other than finding a makeshift way to do it online.

To be fair, he didn't say they wont unlock his phone, he said they can't.

Considering it's a Razr V3 (no suffix), it's probably a bit older and he's likely fulfilled the contractual obligations wrt the handset - they should provide an unlock code if they're capable of it.

He'll probably just have to ask Motorola to generate an unlock code, as T-Mobile doesn't appear to be able to.

We called T-Mobile a couple of months ago and requested an unlock on my wife's Motorola Razor V3m that we'd gotten a few months previous to that. They said no problem but said that they couldn't give unlock codes themselves, but had to forward the request to Motorola. So they did. They said it could be up to a week, but Motorola sent and email within 48 hours and we punched in the unlock code and it unlocked without a hitch.

If it doesn't work out for some reason, codes can always be purchased for $5-10 (with money-back guarantee) via eBay 'n' such.

tmobile unlocks phones regardless of contract status. I called them the day after i got my G1 on contract and got it unlocked. T-mobile customer service rocks. Not sure why they weren't able to unlock the razr though...puzzling.

Wow. My old thread. I have not tried to unlock it since. Now I have a HD2... and before that I had a G1.. 🙂 I WILL call in again to have them unlock these 2.
