don't do anything and you should be fine....they will just switch you over to month-to-month

Nothing.

Wait until it's expired and then call them to see if you can get a handset upgrade or good rate plan.

Or you can just do nothing and continue with your T-Mobile service as-is without renewing a contract.

I want to get a good deal on a new cell will they ask me to get a 2-yr contract or will they give me another 1-yr contract ?

Call them and ask what phones they have available for handset upgrades. Get a list along with which phones require 2 year, which require 1 year, cost for all of them, etc. Then close the call without making a decision.

Do your homework, decide which one you want, then call back when your contract is over and do it.

most deals from tmobile require you to join a 2 year plan. you don't have to wait for the exact date to expire. you can just get a new phone now, join the 2 year plan, and they will extend the 2 years from the date you purchased the new phone.

Don't people get discounts on phones along with the contract extension? If you wait until the contract is expired, the cost of the phone will drop again. You'll get the biggest discount after your contract is expired.

Depends on the rep you get. Most will give you the same deal that you'd get if your contract already expired if you're 1-2 months away from the expiring date. They might even be nicer to you as they'd rather lock you up into a new contract before giving you the chance to shop around.

Heh, reps can't vary with handset upgrades. They're not allowed to. They have a program that does it for them. The most you'd be able to get away with is the rep forgetting to extend the contract dates, but that can be changed later if there are certain specific notes on the account.

If you don't get what you're looking for with one rep, you can always try calling back. ;) Plus, the retail stores can give different types of deals than the call in, though I'm not sure which deals are better.

They shouldn't be able to. If everyone is doing their job, calling customer care will offer more possibilities than going to a local dealer (like "I got a problem with my bill" and "someone without an agenda please explain this rateplan to me") :p

I called and told them I was thinking about switching to cingular because of the new IPOD phone. I asked to speak to an "Account Specialist" this is the important part. Then explain that you can easily get a better deal and push for half off the price they are offering for the phone and then ask for your 6th month of service for free.

This worked for me.

there's no rhyme or reason to it either. just keep calling at different times until you get a CSR that will givr you what you want. I ended up getting a pink razr for $29 w/ 1 yr extension. this was a few months ago when they just came out. I had to call 6 or 7 times, with each person offering me a different price or contract length. you do need to speak to an account specialist though. just tell the CSR you want to cancel and they will forward you to the specialist, who will do everything they can to keep you.

FYI, you can get most of the tmo phones at CompUSA for the advertised price by just extendding your contract (they call it a "handset upgrade")

recently people were gettign the new SDA for $50 at cusa for extending theiur contract one year, same price plan.

You were just telling you what you did? ;)

1) Reps can't change the cost of the phone. The cost of the phone (the amount of the discount you get) is based on amount you pay each month for your rate plan, the period of time between now and the last time you got a handset upgrade on whatever phone number you're looking to upgrade, and other things. It's all computed and the prices and discounts are set electronically.

2) When you're talking to a customer service rep, you're not talking to anyone with the authority to change that. The "account specialist" is just another CSR or a manager who can't change the parameters required to generate the discount.

Any joe-blow CSR can give you your 6th month free if your account meets the right conditions. If not, it's against policy to give that out. There's account requirements for every benefit or "perk" that customer care can give out. It's against policy to give them out if the account doesn't meet those requirements and there's nothing you can otherwise do to get them (like asking the magic question about speaking to an account specialist).
