I was about to say that. Many here will want to keep their old number if there switching providers, and waiting will probably be the best thing. It's only a little over a month, and the deals aren't going to get worse. I think T-mobile will have 1000 anytime minutes instead of 600 coming soon. They have that in Cali, but it should be nationwide pretty soon, thats what I heard.

Few Questions:

1. Anyone know if a new sidekick will be out before christmas, or when a new updated version is schedules for release.

2. Anyone have a heads up on the new plans for nov 24 when the portability goes into effect.

the new color sidekick just came out in june, so don't expect another new release for at least 6 months. as for the software update, it should be out by the end of this month, but don't quote me on that ;p

How well does this work as a phone? I tried playing with one at Circuit City and couldnt even figure out where my ear/mouth was suppossed to go. Does the screen need to be flipped open to accept an incoming call?

Is there any option to just get a data-only plan for it? The best I seen on Tmobiles site was $19.99 for the cheapest plan, plus $20 for unlimted data.

I'd love to get a Sidekick, but I like my current cellphone. Trying to see if I can find a middle ground and have both, or if the Sidework works well for calls. Any opinions?

It works moderately well as a phone. It is my only cell phone, but I don't use it heavily for voice; maybe 150 minutes per month on average.

To use it as a phone, you hold the screen side toward your face/ear. The ear end is the end with the wheel. I believe most heavy phone users use the headset thing with this device.

The screen does not need to be flipped open when a call comes in. You press the wheel down and it answers the call. I think that where it fails the most is when you need to dial the phone. You have two options. You can either flip the screen up and use the number keys to dial, or use the onscreen keyboard navigated with the wheel so you don't need to flip up the screen. Of course, I have most of the numbers I need to dial in the address book, so dialing those is very easy.

There is a data only plan for the SK. It is $29.95 a month for unlimited data.

like I said, I don't have a problem with the phone functionality of the SK. I could see other people not liking it. You might want to check around with Compusa, CC, or a Tmobile store and see if one of them will let you use it for a couple of weeks and then return it if you hate the phone.

The Sidekick supports POP3. You can configure it to send and retrieve from up to three POP3 accounts.

The Blackberry integrates with business email better, though. The SK has no Outlook synching currently.

I own a CSK myself and though it has shortfalls such as being kind of a big phone, I honestly couldn't go back to a regular phone. Being able to browse web pages on the go whereever you are is just unbeatable. Also AIM is on all the time so that's just an added bonus. I just laugh when people tell me about their "INTERNET" capabilities on regular cell phones.

I have a few questions about browsing web pages:

1) What about sites like Fandango.com to browse movie times?
2) Have you logged on to any online banking using your CSK?
3) How does it handle webmail like Yahoo or Hotmail?
4) What are the major limitations?
5) How is the speed?

1.) Haven't tried
2.) I've logged into my credit union's website -- www.golden1.com. I think I have gotten into Washington Mutual before, as well. PayPal works perfectly.
3.) Yahoo works. Don't have a Hotmail account.
4.) Compared to what? It can do everything your cellphone can, only better :)
5.) Probably around dialup speed.

I currently have a CSK. I find it to be extremely useful, although if you make a lot of calls, I wouldn't recommend it. I plan on keeping mine until the new XDA2 PocketPC Phone becomes available in the US.

Why do you recommend against using the sidekick for calls?

Thanks,
Wolverine

I think that if you plan on using it a lot for calls, you might want to think about another phone... its a little bit uncomfortable to make calls with. but if you're like me and use it mainly for data, it really isn't a problem.

also, like someone above mentioned, you could also get a headset for it... and some people have even gotten bluetooth headsets for them so they don't have to bother w/ the wires.
