I know people have talked about it before, but I have (rather, in this case, after it gets RMA'ed, will have) a KA7, and am thinking about getting a 700mhz T-bird.

Anyone know if its compatible? I know that jator is using it like that, but i want to know if anyone has tried it/ had problems.

Also, are the heatplates the same as on old athlons? (i've heard a rumour that they weren't, but I don't know). I ask beacuse I want to get a VOS32, but its expensive enough that I don't wanna take the dive if its not going to work "out of the box"

i know slot A is dead...but my board is being RMA'ed....otherwise, i could just leave it and buy a socket A, but those aren't terribly great yet, so I have no CPU, no motherboard, but will be getting a new KA7 in a few weeks (free because of RMA'ed) and need to buy a CPU beacuse my last one died.

Thanks for the link, and any other ideas?

[EDIT] oh yeah, and i'm short on cash (gotta go to college in the fall :) ) so just buying a new board isn't an option at this point...

Ulysses- I do not agree the Slot "A" mobo's are a outdated format. First, AMD has agreed to make Slot A versions of the T-bird through the end of the year, and although AMD officially says it won't, the T-bird does work on the KA7. It has been tested a several sites, and the only problems that arose were with o/c, and with the some of the higher clocked T-birds. From my understanding the T-Birds just need to have the CPU drive strength and pull-up strength adjusted slightly and you need the RY bios. Also, Abit is reported to already being working on a "slotket" type adapter to work on these boards. I agree that if their is no adapdter developed, then it may quickly be "out of date", but with all the Kx133 mobo's floating around still, it would not be in the mobo manufacturers best interest to just "let it die". I mean these boards are still relatively "new" and work well, so I personally don't think they are outdated yet...Just my .02...

Burnt Kooshie, what happened to your CPU?! How did it "die"? I thought it was running real good for you at a 117mhz bus right? I hope you have some better luck... I have seen some sites that have tested the 700 T-Bird on the Ka7 and it worked perfectly. The only thing I read as far as incompatibility was with the higher clocked T-Birds (800-up), but the 700's work fine with some bios tweaking. I heard that they do not overclock well in the KX133 boards though, but you can still use a GFD. Also, if you decide you don't want to risk the T-Bird being incompatible, I know that Athlonoc.com has a special on a 900 "classic" Athlon tested to 1050 for $325 I believe. They also have a Slot A 700mhz T-Bird for $179. Good luck...

Insane3D:

That link I gave says it all and that's from an AMD enthusiast's site. The Slot A is dead simply because their is no reason for the processor to be on a PCB when the L2 cache is on-die. I hope that AMD does develop a slotket, but I think they have bigger fish to fry with P4/Willamette on the horizon. And even the slotkets for the P3's have had their share of problems.

:)

BurntKooshie:

I know budgets are budgets and the new Socket A boards are expensive, but maybe if you talked to the vendor they can make some adjustment other than just replace the same board - there is always a price -maybe.
