Im building a new system and wanna hit 1ghz for sure so im undecided as to which one of these will give me the better chance @ a gig. There about the same price and what i wanna spend so plz dont say i should get something else. Im pretty sure the duron will do it as the 700 i have works fine up to 927Mhz.
Thanks for the suggestions, will be making purchase at the cheapest online vender i can find (thank the gods for pricewatch).

The Tbird will be faster than the Duron no matter what. What speed you will hit depends on lots of things, but just get the Tbird.

Tyrant222: If you're only looking to hit 1GHz for the sake of hitting 1GHz then go for the Duron. From the few Durons and T-Birds I've overclocked, I've found that the former are better overclockers.

On the other hand, if you want the better processor, go for the T-Bird. (Who knows, you may hit 1GHz with it and have the best of both worlds!)

If you are truly set on hitting the 1 gig mark, I'd go for the duron, but I'd take a Thunderbird 750@850 and up over a duron@1000

IMHO you should get the duron and put the money saved into a better video card. But then I'm assuming you're interested in games. If that's not the case then get the athlon. You'll see more benefit from a better video card than a slightly faster cpu.

Price/performance wise the duron wins easily.
